Ip Man 4: The Finale

- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsI'm a huge fan of both Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins. The prospect of them both being in an Ip Man movie and fighting each other was enough to get me psyched to see this final installment. The franchise had a decrease in quality since its first two entries...but not a huge drop off, all the movies are enjoyable. Similar to the "Rocky" franchise, the Ip man series has drifted away from a drama and has begun to focus more on the action. This one continues this trend. On that note, the action in this series continues to impress. But how is the story? The main course of this film are the fight scenes. But how do they set up the characters and situation to have the fight? It is sometimes hilariously forced. There is a fight with Bruce Lee outside a diner that could come out of an 80's arcade game. The scene even has a boss battle intro. The villains are just cartoonishly evil. They are just being bad guys so our heroes can come in and beat them up, and we the audience can cheer for them. There are a lot of subplots and villains going around this movie. But then, Scott Adkins decides that he is going to take over this movie. And effectively comes in and tells all lesser villains that HE is the main villain of the story. In execution, it is unintentionally hilarious. It does its job; it gets us to the awesome fight scenes. However, there isn't much to the story or characters beyond their fights.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsA more than worthy end to one of the greatest martial art action dramas for many a long year. A great script performed beautifully by the wonderful Donnie Yen both in terms of acting and martial arts prowess. Adkins is also superb but it's Yens movie all the way. I've absolutely adored this series of films and rank them as some of the finest martial arts dramas ever made. Absolutely superb. A unequivocal recommendation for a near faultless quadrilogy of jaw dropping quality.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsSome of the voices dubbed were a bit off kilter like Fat Bo sounding like a cockney Londoner. "All together now, Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner in good ol' London Town..."
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsI enjoyed this one and the story it told about the IP Man's journey to San Francisco during the 1960's when Bruce Lee was just coming into his own. It also shows us the ugly side of racism at that time for the Chinese and how they overcame those obstacles with the IP Man to show them the way. Sad to see this as the last instalment for Donny Yen with the passing of IP Man, but hopefully more good martial arts stories ahead
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA decent story (still full with pure evil and good people) woven by good action sequences and a beautiful ending to the series.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsDespite downgrading the titular character to a passive role, Ip Man 4: The Finale presents a nuanced and mature take on racism, much to the delight of those who felt that the second instalment gave a childish representation of the issue.
