Jack the Giant Slayer

Jack The Giant Slayer had something of an identity crisis.

Forget that Giant Slayer feels photocopied and is entirely unnecessary. It's just not exciting.

A story of derring do and social climbing, serving as an excuse for colossal battles with a load more orcs, the true purpose of the movie.

Watchable in a ridiculous way, and director Bryan Singer supplies quite a bit of entertainment bang for your buck.

Some detailed design work doesn't save a lackluster whole.

An honest swashbuckling romp with appealing pantomime overtones, and one of the better fairy tale films to date.

While it borrows from plenty of other better movies that came before it, "Jack the Giant Slayer" is one buffed-up fairy tale movie that works.

Even if the prevailing flavorlessness of everything onscreen leaves us feeling somewhat indifferent, Singer’s clear-cut presentation must be admired.

It's an interesting idea - to make a theatrical, big-budget, computer effects-heavy action film based on the simple tale of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Feels rather disappointing.
