Oscar nominee Diane Varsi ("Peyton Place") steals the show as a sympathethic nurse.

This movie would have aged much better if a.) the dialog wasn't mostly dubbed over for some inexplicable reason and b.) the color sequences were as well done as the black & white ones. The color sequences look like a TV movie from the period. There were many great up and coming actors from this late 60s-70s time period, but I don't think many would cite Timothy Bottoms as one of them. I know I was never impressed with him, not in "Last Picture Show", not in this one. The concept of having the voice of the patient is a great one; the execution of it is sometimes unintentionally laughable. Again: Bottoms is not particularly gifted in line delivery so his voice overs are not nearly as compelling as they should be. This would have hit much closer to home in 1971, of course: not only was Vietnam raging, but World War II and Korea had more than its fair share of living vets (as did World War I). And later in the decade we would have films that tread this ground much better: Coming Home, The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. Still.....having said all that.....this movie has a novel approach to the subject and is worth noting. I hate remakes, but this one could definitely be improved upon.

Disturbing as it's meant to be. An important film, a masterpiece.

This tale of bodily tragedy is supposedly an ode to anti-war sentiments but this film largely does not come off as "anti-war" material. This Vietnam era film is quite surreal and tilts between being bleak and straightforward and religious in a more cerebral fashion. An interesting watch but it won't convert war romanticists.

A large cast of unknowns in an anti-war story about a man who fought a war to end all wars Based on the book by Trumbo It stars a patriotic young American in WW1 named Joe Bonham He is rendered blind, deaf, limbless, and mute by a horrific artillery shell attack The only thing for certain is his memory which is more of a burden since he can't tell if he's awake or dreaming everything Trapped in what's left of his body, he desperately looks for a way to end his life Suicide might be his only option yet he's not sure if a sympathetic nurse can help The movie itself during the war is shot entirely in black and white to match the historical aesthetic and the sequences with Joe before being fatally injured are in full color emphasizing life before the fighting Joe despite being completely immobile he can learn to tell time and recognize his surroundings He continuously recalls his childhood to his stern father to being on the field and saying goodbye to his girl Joe tries to make sense of his sanity and reality given his current predicament all while learning about the horrors of war and what it takes away Lots of pacifist themes in here, shows demonstrations of the horrors of war, and asking for not much Many injured soldiers can also be the product of the men who run the profession This is a rather heartbreaking movie to watch with this man rendered helpless trapped in a prison he can't get out of Still the movie gets across the intent of war and it's horrible trail of ruin it leaves behind Even the voiceless, mutilated troops deserve to set free

Devastating story of a young soldier hit by a morta shell on the last day of World War One. Lies in hospital, his body destroyed & a fate worse than death with no way of communicating, but fully conscious & able to think, reliving his life through strange dreams & memories.

It was AMAZING! I saw that movie from the Metallica song 'one' and both of 'em (movie and song) are one of my favourites now.
