This is a great father and daughter relationship movie. Will Smith has a great job portraying Williams father. What I like about this film is that is more of a dynamics of family, life, and decision-making Rather than just being a tennis coming-of-age great player. Overall, it’s a great movie that Will Smith does one of his great performances of his career.

An engaging biopic that shows the rise of two underdogs with the help and detriment of their stubborn yet passionate father.

I don't even like tennis but the story of Richard Williams is incredible. Absolutely worth watching to see his vision and drive and to go against expert opinions on what to do to achieve his and his daughters ambitions. Incredible.

Typically, I'm an easy mark for sports movies. Stuff like Rocky, Rudy, Hoosiers and Sandlot are some of my all-time favorite films. Even lesser sports movies always seem to strike a cord with me because of the timeless messages they instill. I will always enjoy themes like, work hard and you can achieve your goals, or when you get knocked down you get back up again. Problem is, most sports movies like to focus on the underdog. We root for them to succeed because they're the lost cause, and it is all the more triumphant to see them rise up to the challenge of their rivals. How do you do that with Venus and Serena Williams? It's kind of like making a sports movie about Tom Brady, yes they all were underdogs at some point in their career, but from a very young age they were the ones to beat. So in theory, the idea of focusing on the father of a great athlete seems like a great idea. Behind every great athlete was a parental figure helping them along the way, and it is about time they get the spotlight they deserve. Parents, they the real MVP. But there is fair amount of irony to this story. A large portion of the story focuses on Richard Williams saying how he isn't trying to steal the spotlight, and how what he is doing is entirely for the children. Richard not wanting to steal the spotlight from his daughters...in a movie called "King Richard"... where Will Smith stars as Richard, and wins an Oscar. Kind of looks like Richard Williams is stealing the spotlight from his daughters. There's a lot a liked in the movie. I liked the moments of parenting that Richard has with the family, trying to teach them to stay humble. I think Jon Bernthal steals the show as he enters in. Where Will Smith's accent may be distracting at times, I never for a second disbelieved Bernthal's accent in this movie. On the negative side, the character of Richard Williams comes across as an attention seeking glory hound. He takes offense from people that mean him absolutely no disrespect. A character says "It's amazing that your daughters have come so far." and Richard construes that statement to be insulting. Come to think of it, maybe Will Smith was perfect casting for this role. The movie still succeeds as being a fine sports movie, a good inspirational tale, and teaches lessons of both staying humble while still not selling yourself short. It may not be an ace, but it still scores points on me.

Watched today, Sat. Nov. 30, 2024. I really wanted this to be a movie about the real stars of the family, Serena and Venus Smith, along with their mother and sisters. Cannot recommend unless your enjoy, sentimental made-for-TV-movies. Will Smith and Jada Smith are to blame for this mess. I doubt either of them will ever get another shot at producing a film. The only job Smith had after 2022 was another boring "Bad Boys" sequel. Once was enough. I've seen better acting than Will Smith's performance in dog food commercials. Cannot understand how Will Smith won an Academy Award for this performance. The members of the Academy were too lazy to watch Denzel Washington in the Tragedy of Macbeth, so they gave the award to a feel-good movie instead. Except for all the female leads and co-stars, the male actors seem like armatures and appear to be hung over. Either that, or they had the worse make up artists on set. What a huge disappointment!

Just because it aims to inspire doesn't mean it would. The movie is a mess. The guy is a dick. The story should've been how the two girls overcame all the obsticles including the dick Dad.
