Lara Croft: Tomb Raider has serious script and direction problems, but some lovers and fans still love this absurd film.

In 2001, I was a 14 year old teenage girl who was glued to the screen playing the original Tomb Raider video games, watching Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in theaters felt like a dream come true. Angelina Jolie was the perfect casting choice at the time. With her striking physical resemblance to the character and that confident, no-nonsense attitude, she was Lara Croft—the version we knew from those early, iconic PlayStation adventures. Her performance brought the beloved digital archaeologist to life in a way that felt authentic and exciting, and also the sex appeal for many.
What really stood out to me then—and still does today—was how much the movie felt like the video game itself. The straightforward plot, the exotic tombs, the mystical relics, and the action sequences were all reminiscent of what made the early Tomb Raider games so captivating. It didn’t try to be overly complex or philosophical—it simply delivered the thrills, puzzles, and sense of adventure we loved, in live action form.
For many of us in 2001, that was exactly what we wanted. We didn’t care about deep character arcs or gritty realism—we wanted to feel like we were right there with Lara, dodging traps, uncovering secrets, and fighting off villains in style. And that’s what the film gave us. No matter what modern critics might say in hindsight, at the time, this movie was a major hit among fans and helped raise the bar for what we expected from video game adaptations.
Tomb Raider: Lara Croft wasn’t just a movie—it was an experience that bridged the gap between the games we loved and the blockbuster thrills we craved. And for that, it holds a special place in my nostalgic heart.

Absolutely loved it. I must admit at some points it was a bit silly but as a fan of the games I really enjoyed watching it!

Angelina Jolie was perfectly cast as Lara Croft. As someone who played games (not beaten), in the past, I thought her casting was good. Everything else in the film is a mixture of things that do and don't work. It's not the worst video game movie, but it's better than some of them.

Best lara croft out there, the vibe and the fun is there. Shame the ending was very flat compare to the rest of the movie.
