Licorice Pizza
audience Reviews
, 65% Audience Score- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsAt its heart, this film is an intimate portrait of a day in the life of a young entrepreneur. 15-year-old Gary, full of drive and ambition, powers much of the plot. His counterpart, Alana, ten years older, drifts through her mid-twenties with uncertainty and emotional immaturity. Their dynamic is shaped by a push and pull that resists traditional romantic tropes, presenting instead a bond that is complex, awkward, and undeniably real. Though the age gap is provocative, it is framed through Gary’s precociousness and Alana’s arrested development, making their connection less about power and more about shared confusion, longing, and unlikely companionship. What lingers most is the tenacity of human connection. Despite their fights, fallouts, and missteps, Gary and Alana keep finding their way back to one another. The final run and Alana’s simple “I love you, Gary” mark a moment of emotional truth, not a tidy resolution, but a recognition of something enduring and sincere. Their bond is messy, imperfect, and all the more compelling for it. Watching this film is a genuine delight.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsPaul Thomas Anderson is undeniably a genius, but what sets him apart is that he never settles into a comfort zone. He’s boldly eclectic. In this film, he explores adolescence and adulthood with a playful tone, yet never loses the sharp brilliance of his direction.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA decent movie with great dialogue. I like the 70s attire and era of the whole movie. Alana Haim's performance was great, and she appeared like a seasoned actor. I hope Anderson produces more movies similar to Licorice Pizza.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThis is a great coming of age, romance, film with great performances from both debutants. Paul Anderson does a great job a building up a romantic, dramatic film. However, what I did not like was using a character who is a minor as a love interest for a young adult woman that was a little Creepy and awkward. Aside from that, it was a really good movie.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsAlana actually drove that semi. I love it when myths about women drivers are shattered!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsWriter & director Paul Thomas Anderson returns with the brilliant "Licorice Pizza" charming & funny story about growing up during the 70s. I find with most of Anderson's work, it feels like main story is interwoven with mini stories, encounters with wild side characters & it works. Filled with brilliant performances, especially from the two young leads, Cooper Hoffman, the confident child actor who isn't getting the parts now as he's too old & Alana, the older & outspoken love interest as they both go through the treacherous navigation of first love. "Licorice Pizza" looks good from the cinematography from Michael Bauman, & the brilliant soundtrack features some great hits from that era.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsWhat an incredibly well made motion picture. Paul Thomas Anderson can't help but make wonderful films as he is a master of his craft. He writes such interesting characters in all of his films. The entire cast was fantastic, but Bradley Cooper stole the show for me. He is such a great actor. Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman were adorable on the screen together. The film ended so beautifully. Those two spent the entire film chasing after one another and finally they caught the love they were both seeking. Alana Kane may be 10 years older than Gary, but due to her innocent nature, they are essentially on the same level of maturity. They make a unique, yet beautiful couple. I didn't fully appreciate Licorice Pizza the first time I saw it. I deeply appreciate it now. I definitely recommend this film. 91/100
