Look Away

Not sure why all the hate on this movie…..it’s a great story with beautiful people. Cast, direction, cinematography and script are all excellent. Yes..a little slow but a great watch thriller.

India Eisley is good as poor Maria & the wronged airam l. I originally thought this to be a story of a repressed girl who goes over the edge, but it’s really a sinister ghostly horror story based on rejection & revenge. It’s a bit muddled at times, but anger & rage isn’t always directed where it’s supposed to go.

Quite well shot movie, anchored by a capable actor and supported by a good cast. The writing didn't quite stick the landing but it wasn't bad. For its genre it probably could have done with a few more spine chilling moments and a bit of pace.

Not by any means a great movie, but I enjoyed many parts of this film. The plot was okay and kept me tied in and there were decent jump scares. Would watch again (maybe)

I am shocked that this movie is so poorly reviewed everywhere. Obviously this isn’t a masterpiece by any means, as I do think the film doesn’t milk the premise and potential of conversations and plot points enough, some conversations fall flat and weird and kinda leads the film to a “dumber” direction. Like especially conversations between Airam and Sean or with Maria and her dad and mom. But when I watched it, it was kinda obvious to me that this is a shot at a raw teenage diary or a supernatural phenomenon. So when all the people are complaining about how this movie is sick showing underage masturbation, sex, and nudity and rates the film a 1/10 I’m like ????? Obviously this isn’t real underage nudity and sex as the actors are well into their late 20s and even 30s??? 😭 it’s a movie that’s portraying very normal lives of teenagers?? And I don’t think there is anything wrong with portraying that, and I don’t think the movie is exploitative or overtly sexual. It is portraying the protagonist teenage girl fighting with her own body image, self love, and relationships with others. So I just think it’s unfair to take off so many points because one is uncomfortable with sex scenes and fail to see past the point of the movie (a film about a lonely and growing teenager), especially many films and shows have portrayed underage sex for the longest time (ex. Euphoria the show is an example). I do think the film can be a bit boring and doesn’t cut to the chase sometimes, but it is gripping enough and the plots are still there where I would wanna sit through the whole thing. Anyways, I absolutely loved the premise of the movie and its portrayal of struggling with teenagehood like depression, anxiety, body image, self love, bad parents, and your peers surpassing you while you feel helpless. I think these points were portrayed whether or not it was flushed out or accurate to real life mental illnesses. With that said, I do think the film did nail the main points and really did try. It definitely made me ponder and think after the movie which I consider as a good enough of a thriller. 7.5/10

Beautifully made in terms of its cinematography. India carries this film with her wonderful acting, her supporting cast does a great job. The film has an unfortunately anticlimactic ending. The sub plot about a twin sister was confusing. I liked India, her acting was great with becoming a different person and she had a lot of great scenes as the mirror character.

The thought they were really doing something here.

The idea of a reflection becoming something haunting is cool enough to get you through the subpar story.

For a film with such a boring and forgettable title this was actually really good. It was engaging and interesting. Even though the core concept was relatively unoriginal, the execution is what makes this so entertaining. The casting is perfect and so is the acting. All of the cast feel right for the roles. The film is beautifully made, the cinematography and the music are literally perfect. There is a visual interest and variety so it never feels drab unlike some other similar films. It reminded me of S. Darko (2009) which I actually really enjoyed also. My only gripe was that I didn't like the ending, it was a very disappointing ending for me. It reminded me of the weak ending for May (2002). Well worth watching but be prepared for a weak ending to a strong story.
