Materialists
audience Reviews
, 69% Audience Score- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsnot the RomCom I expected or was advertised... dialog was very slow and at times the storyline was actually a bit serious... Love these actors, but this could have been a lot better...
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThe movie was enjoyable and had some good laughs.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsI’m still in shock at how terrible this movie was…cardboard acting, meandering plot with forced heavy topical issue that is never even explored, zero chemistry between actors, sloppy directing, bizarre music choices, no emotion to any of it, literally felt embarrassed for Pedro to be part of this. Dakota just has no range and elicits nothing, and the only upside was somehow Chris managed to come off as natural and feel like the only part of this whole thing that wasn’t completely contrived. Cinematography was also fine, but seriously, is this what we’ve come to with scripts at this point? Also marketing it as romcom? Where was anything funny in this? Just so bad all around. Wow.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsCaptivated — that’s the only word that truly fits. “The Materialists” isn’t just a film about love; it’s a meditation on what it means to choose it, again and again, even when the world makes that choice feel inconvenient or unfashionable. It’s love without conditions or judgement. Dakota, Chris, and Pedro deliver a rare kind of chemistry; electric yet grounded, intimate yet universal. Their performances breathe life into a script that stands as one of the most thoughtful and emotionally intelligent I’ve seen in years. Every line feels earned. Every silence speaks. Even the way they look at each other in this film communicates emotion in so many ways. It’s giving OSCAR noms. In a time when love is often reduced to convenience or status—a mere transaction masked as connection—this film reminds us that real love is something else entirely. It’s not about what you can gain, but about what you’re willing to give without question. Unmotivated, uncalculating , and absolutely undeniable. I haven’t felt this way watching a romantic comedy since “My Best Friend’s Wedding” —and that comparison doesn’t come lightly. “The Materialists” is witty, wistful, and wise, proving that the genre isn’t dead—it just needed the right story to revive it.
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsIt was cute but not worth going to the movies over. I could've waited until it was streaming. The best scenes were the ones with Pedro Paschal in them.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsDakota Johnson was perfect in this room com with heart! She plays a matchmaker, but ultimately who will be hers -- Chris Evans or Pedro Pascal?
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsI was expecting a rom com. This had some darker issues than I expected.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsOverall, I liked The Materialists. The performances were good, particularly Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, but the chemistry is lacking and a few lines of dialogue will leave you wondering why any of these characters are attempting to pursue romantic relationships with one another.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsIt was good, it shows the reality for single people 38+
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThought provoking and overall feel good movie. The chemistry between the three leads is incredible. There were four of us who watched together, ages 83, 55-56, & 28. The movie inspired great conversation in the car ride home!
