Mr. Deeds

Pretty awful, but teen Sandler fans may like it.

The star and his numbskull cronies piss on Capra's grave with acrid insincerity.

How could Adam Sandler, of all people, remake Capra? Well, shoddily, as it happens.

A remake so bad it will make your gums bleed. Orphanage fires are funnier.

There's a price to pay for the guilty pleasure Steven Brill's film affords -- a relentless process of dumbing down that tells the audience it's cool to be a doofus.

Nothing about this movie works.

...a typically hit-and-miss Sandler vehicle that benefits substantially from its star’s affable efforts...

Sandler's only saving grace with Mr. Deeds may be that the majority of his fans are too young to know of, or just don't care about, Frank Capra or movie masterpieces...

The end result isn't dreadful, but it is patchy.

Sandler barely expends any energy trotting out the "average dude who shakes up stodgy high society" schtick, and director Steven Brill and scripter Tim Herlihy follow lazy suit.
