Mr. Malcolm's List

Of course it’s all very unoriginal but that’s kind of the point. In fact there is something courageous about a film which doesn’t purport to be anything beyond the well-established genre it seeks to emulate. 


It’s pleasant, frothy, unapologetically by-numbers stuff.

Lightweight, ephemeral and almost meaningless, this Regency-era romance is consistently saved by the stellar presence of Zawe Ashton...

Sadly, Allain and director Emma Holly Jones can’t channel Austen’s wit or her granular attention to social mores and morals.

The charming performances make this a win for colourblind casting. On the list of period romcom requirements, the sweet love story ticks all the right boxes.

The movie never stops trying to make us laugh.

Mr Malcolm’s List might be drenched in predictability, but its diverse cast, sweet romance and comedic zing give this Jane Austen-style story a much-needed edge.

It's cliched for sure, but it's the sort of film that many will return to for comfort and will be discovered over and over. A truly delightful diversion.

The story beats are very familiar and there are parts that can drag, yet Mr. Malcolm’s List is a delightful film.

Mr. Malcolm’s List has unfortunately just missed the effect it’s going for. That ineffable charm of Austen that’s often imitated and rarely achieved is essential for this type of film to truly soar.
