My Family/Mi Familia
audience Reviews
, 88% Audience Score- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsAs a Mexican, I must say I can’t relate with this family, but is also true that there are so many regions in Mexico and every single one of them has his own forms and manners, the thing that brings all Mexicans together is that we are so damn loud.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsA classic Mexican/Chicano film! If you're into the Chicano and Mexican culture, I recommend watching this classic. Not going to lie, it starts off a little cheesy, but it gets better and better as you keep watching it. Just like the other reviews said, this is definitely accurate to the Mexican/Chicano culture in LA. Overall, this is a great movie.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsFrancis Ford Coppola and director Gregory Navas tell a pretty satisfying story of three generations of Mexican-American families. They want to live their best lives possible without hurt, heartache, or hardship. It doesn't always come easy since the main father narrates their entire journey starting in the 1930s all the way to the 1990s. Some of the siblings want to be married, have a family while others devote themselves to god or living the life of crime in order to not fall to expected lifestyles of their parents. Each era is different affecting each member. They have ideas, passions, dreams but also obstacles and challenges whether personally or politically. A pretty large cast of unknown Latino actors minus Jimmy Smits and Jennifer Lopez. Still they honestly feel like a real extended family able to go through the many shortcomings anyone has dealt with. Every family has their beginnings, legacy, and end but none of them can be told they each didn't leave a part of themselves leaving an impact on all their lives. Anyone's roots can be traced back as far as possible. Whether you're Mexican or not every family member is just as important as the next before or after.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis movie right here is amazing. The way they portray the characters and how their stories are told is amazing. Made me cry, laugh and smile. Absolute must-watch.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThe best inspiring movie ever made!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsbest movie of all times!!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI don't know why, but Hispanic families on the lower end of the economic scale seem more prone to social dysfunction, at least in the movies -- and especially in this one. Nevertheless, it is a well done story, and at the end of it, I buried my face in hands and cried. It touched me that much.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsMy Family, Great Movies This movie is by far one of the best Latino stories I have ever seen. True, the movie does use stereotypes (such as Jimmy and his prison life) Chuco and his gang life which eventually leads to his death, and of course who can forget the backyard wedding and the large family living in a small home. However, this movie is not meant to be a representation of ALL Latino's everywhere, rather its meant to merely tell one families story and struggles in the United States. The comments stating "This movie does not represent Latinos everywhere!!" are absolutely correct. And it does not represent Latinos, but it does help you learn about one family you learn to almost care about by the end of the film. Going back to the story itself, I can honestly say that the movie itself was very well made. Jimmy Smits performance was superb and the movie was very focused on all the family members. The film provides a sense of hope at the end, basically trying to get across that while life is full of problems they are manageable. Also, the fact that the movie also involved a different Latino culture, such as the Central American Isabel helped viewers understand that even among Latino's there are differences in cultures. I would definitely recommend this movie to someone willing to learn about one Mexican American families struggle.
