Good story and good acting. I didn’t love the way it was filmed but I got used to it after a while.

Really solid movie. Filming from the perspective of the two main characters was really smart, as you could see people's expressions from their perspectives and how they were pre-judged without anything being known about them. The cutaway takes of random things worked, but I wasn't really sure what they meant a lot of times, but it set a good tone somehow. Kind of reminded me of the Tree of Life with how it was shot. Hard to believe this is a true story.

Overall a good movie. Great acting. However, the director’s style detracts from the movie’s impact. An important story that should not be forgotten especially as we now live in the post-truth era where the reality of the past is being erased.

    Beautifully told, if sometimes frustrating.

I didn't like at all the first person filming, but this movie wasn't about my comfort, I acknowledge. This film was in my head for many days after watching.

Filmed from a first-person point of view, this adaptation of Colson Whitehead's 2019 novel of the same title strives to immerse the viewers through the eyes of the titular protagonists into the hellish experiences of a reform school that are based on the unspeakable abuses of The Dozier School for Boys but the gimmicky visual style becomes distracting enough to deplete the emotional punch.

Why do they nominate movies that suck for academy awards? It was tedious to watch. All hand held camera work from low angles and zoomed in. I felt like I was watching the movie thru a toilet paper tube. Scenes seemed to be disjointed and choppy, without continuity. Maybe the themes had merit, but it was lost on me, as I could get past the nausea.

An achievement in film making and story telling, this novel to screen edition is leaps and bounds over most in its category. Coinciding with the Civil Rights Movement, MLK, and Vietnam, Nickel Boys dives into the real world of what was supposed to be a post slavery America. Not for the faint of heart and for those who wish to look away from our terrible past and current situation in the United States.

The first person cinematography was unique. There were many other creative storytelling techniques that I could see rubbing people the wrong way but I thoroughly enjoyed how they set everything up for the end. (78%)

Movie is a hot mess. The storytelling is nonlinear and becomes confusing. Movie is boring and way too long. Director's choice of first person POV is distracting. Film is inspired by true story with an opportunity to make a great film, but it failed miserably. Don't waste your time.
