Ocean's 8

The star-studded cast delivered some great performances, but ultimately, the all-women team served up their heist with a side of marketplace feminism.

Director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Hunger Games), who wrote the story and collaborated with Olivia Milch on the screenplay, closely follows the Soderbergh formula of wry humor, nimble plotting, and wall-to-wall bass riffs.

There's a sweet satisfaction in watching as Ocean pulls it off.

Throughout this desultory, dreary movie, odd lines of dialogue pop up that seem to perversely comment on the sheer superfluity of Ocean's 8.

It's bright and breezy. It's frothily directed. It's entertainingly played by an ensemble cast, all of whom appear to be having a really good time.

For Ocean's 8's part, the film is entertaining and hilarious, with much of the cast saving what's an uneventful and predictable script until the final exhilarating heist scene.

Oceans 8 was a great time! It does suffer from some pacing issues in the middle and I do think it’s about 20 minutes too long but as a fan of Ocean’s 11 I think this is as good a successor as one could ask for.

Had Ocean's 8 been at least as visually distinct as Soderbergh undoubtedly would have made it, the movie might be more than another of Hollywood's forgettable reboot-sequel things.

To call this film average would be to deny its uncanny ability to entertain.

Certainly looks beautiful. It's just too bad they forgot to make a full movie to go along with it.
