Old Guy is always acted with commitment and Hoffman shows he has the chops for a bigger role. Three big names doing a professional job … but the target isn’t found.

You’ve probably seen this movie a few times already, but the two leads work hard to ensure that Old Guy can at least be a pleasant diversion on your next two-hour flight.

Old Guy is as boilerplate as its title, which, on the surface, evokes a playful irony that is nowhere to be found in the final product.

A warmed-over rehash of a million VOD actioner tropes, only slightly stained by the specific talent this one wastes.

Director Simon West and writer Greg Johnson take the tired Grumpy Veteran Argues With Fresh-Faced Rookie trope to all-new lows in a film that feels maddeningly disinterested in delivering any of its underdeveloped goods.

As far as acting is concerned, Christoph Waltz is better than the dialogue but not given an opportunity to really bring it forth.

Old Guy isn’t executed extremely well, and it does remain a bit stale, but the performances are at least sufficiently dialed in to keep things pleasantly light enough for a painless, one-and-done watch.

Old Guy is never terrible, but it’s ultimately bland and forgettable.

Another week, another hit man movie—one that turns out to be a thoroughly mediocre entry in the groaningly overstuffed genre, offering little that’s new and not doing enough to invigorate the familiar stuff.
