Ado and Nakata’s music does, however, make Uta sound like a real pop star, as opposed to the polished but underwhelming songs used in this year’s other musically-themed anime features, like “Belle” or “Inu-Oh.”

The best part about it is you can enjoy it on various levels, even just kicking back and being entranced by the animation itself.

One Piece Film: Red sails a fine line, its story beats familiar enough for the newcomers, with details as bizarre and garish as a One Piece story could possibly get.

A sugar rush of stunning animation, great music and a strong central story with frequent stretches of utter nonsense.

One Piece is not exquisite, in the manner of Studio Ghibli, although the fans say the quality here is much better than in the series. It is, however, fantastically energetic.

“One Piece Film: Red” is a worthy continuation of probably the most successful franchise in anime history, and a movie that will satisfy all fans of action anime, even those who know very little of the original.



Packed with musical numbers and vibrant fight sequences, the movie, while perhaps lost on some new fans, is a striking character-piece and a visual treat for any Straw Hat enthusiast.
