One True Loves

There is little payoff, with Fickman running shy of the full-blooded commitment to make his film a proper weepie and instead constantly reverting to sassy, annoyingly self-aware comedy that makes light of everything.

The movie has the general shape of a comedy, but any laughs are largely unintentional.

Oddly, the film resists showing much actual romance, in favor of cheap drama and a shabby story. The pacing is all off, and what we want to see more of -- the actual romance(s)! -- is as MIA.

One Trues Loves tries — perhaps too hard — to be a timeless love story, but where nuance is needed to pull audiences in, it instead chooses melodrama.

I liked the cast, it was silly and weird and lonely slightly bizarre but also kinda sweet…it was so close to being great
