Past Lives (2023) A Melancholic Romance about Choices and Past Lives (11,793 – 28 Jun 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In Seoul, the twelve-year- old Hae Sung and Na Young are best friends and have feelings for each other. When Na Young’s family emigrates to Canada, they lose contact with each other, and Na Young changes her name to Nora. Twelve years later, Hae Sung (Teo Yoo) succeeds in contacting Nora (Greta Lee), who moved to New York to go to the university, and they start to talk to each other every day. Nora invites Hae Sung to visit her in New York, but he says that he would rather go to China to practice Mandarin since this language would be important for the engineering course. Nora asks him to give a time without contact her and he travels to China. Nora goes to a retreat, where she meets the writer Arthur (John Magaro) and five years later, they marry each other. Seven years later, Hae Sung spends his vacation in New York. When he meets Nora, their feelings are rekindled. But Nora is married now. “Past Lives” (2023) is a melancholic romance about choices and past lives by Celine Song. The plot is good but overrated by the critics, provoking hype. The performances are magnificent and the chemistry between Greta Lee and Teo Yoo is awesome. The Korean philosophy of “inyeon” is very interesting and beautiful in this love story. My vote is seven. Subtle, but very meaningful. The cinematography and soundtrack are mesmerizing. A very authentic human story with a masterful ending.

Couldn’t even finish it. From the wimpy husband who couldn’t stick up for himself to the painfully long interactions where absolutely nothing happens, this was truly a terrible movie.

This is a long overdue review of Past Lives, which I hated despite the glowing reviews from many. Watching another new movie confirmed my first impression on the cinematography and now I feel I could say it’s the director’s problem... The pacing of the movie was weird. It was longer than needed to be, rambling at times. There are long close up shots of empty expressions—one can guess what the director wants to achieve but terribly executed, with actors looking like they don't know what to do but sadly aware of the camera focusing in them for an uncomfortably long time. No story or acting there, just empty stares, But my biggest issue with this film is that it packs the stereotypes of so many East Asian soap operas and translates into English. It milks the story and emotions in an excessive way.

    Boring and pretentious.

This was such a solid film - It walked you through the thoughts of each character well, emotion crosses over culture no matter what, and the imagery and interactions were so believable and simple - it put you also into the mindset of someone who has to deal with things of changing culture and how deeply intrencehd we are with where we come from. But we also change as the seasons go, but when familiarity crosses over with your current state, how powerful that really can be. This was a beautiful film. The framing and colors of this film were just nice to watch.

Typical Oscar nominated movie great story and character along with stellar acting and cinematography. The director Celine Song does a great guiding this in terms of shots and editing; I love how some scenes she purposely leave it to the viewer to generate its own conclusion of the story and emotion of the character. Overall, great movie.
