Pearl
audience Reviews
, 83% Audience Score- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis film proves that when something is made with love and dedication, the result can be truly outstanding. Without trying to be pretentious, it flows effortlessly between horror, fantasy, and subtle touches of comedy. Mia Goth delivers a phenomenal performance. Easily the best entry in the entire trilogy.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsunfortunately she's so me
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsA Classic Horror Flick and one of the best Horror prequels ever made. The acting is the strongest point. Everyone does really good but Mia Goth is amazing in this. She's given so much more to work with and focus than X and it shows. She walks the line of being a murderous selfish lunatic and sympathetic and understandable so perfectly and in such a fasinating way. You can't turn away whenever she's on screen. Incredible performance by Goth. Everything else is really good here. This is a slow burn the entire way. The direction is really good here and everything is just more focused and more refined here than X. With the main focus of one character we stay on Pearl the entire way. As X was shot like a 70's flick this is very much shot like a film from the Golden Era set in the silent era. Filled with lush color and some really distrubing scenes. This has kills in it that are very well done but I wouldn't call this a slasher like the first one and it doesn't really have exploitation either. It's got that A24 feeling sure but it feels more like a non exploitative 70's horror flick. Kind of like Carrie or The Omen type stuff if that makes sense. Really deep character driven stuff and very disturbing on a deep level. The themes here explored deal more with Pearl's backstory and what made her into the killer of the first. And boy does it do a great job. If there is one complaint I'd say is that it never really ramps up. The climax of the 5 minute long take of Pearl is really well done but it feels like it can drag a little bit. But it's such a strong improvement and expands on the villian so well that I don't know how you fix that. And I don't know if you need to. Just for how different it is and how it expands on the character so much I could see someone giving this a 5 though. Anyone who is a fan of the director, any actors in this (especially Goth), the first film, or horror flicks in general should check this out.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars'Pearl' doesn't quite hit as well as 'X', though it has enough about it to still be suitably enjoyable. It did lose steam for me the longer it went on and there aren't many moments to remember, tbh I personally would've preferred more of older Pearl than younger Pearl. Still, Mia Goth continues to impress. Tandi Wright stands out too, even if it certainly is Goth's movie. David Corenswet is there too, I wonder what that guy is up to nowadays. The film, like its predecessor, remains a treat visually, the distinctive eras of each flick are definite plus points. A good film, all the same. This and that previous release are quite different, so it's little surprise that there is one that I 'only' like and one that I love. Now to see where 'MaXXXine' falls.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsOne of the best movies I've ever seen. Impeccable acting, incredible script and scenery. There's absolutely nothing bad about it.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsthis film really bored me. so many people have recommended that i watch this, as im a huge fan of horrors, but it was honestly just rubbish. i cant even pin point any specific scenes that were worse than others, it just wasn’t good. the roles were played amazingly and the acting was great, the plot however, really let me down. such a shame.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsThe Technicolor on this talkie is so futuristic! Despite being a prequel film that adds depth to the original “X” film, “Pearl” stands strong as a standalone film about a fame-obsessed, disturbed individual, set in an underrepresented period of Americana. Mia Goth delivers a peak performance as Pearl, likely cementing her status as a scream queen. It has the hallmarks of the “X” series—a period piece about a woman with star aspirations, battling societal norms and her own demons. However, it’s likely the most original of the trilogy, as it pulls from non-horror influences, creating a deeply disturbing film set in a period that is often falsely depicted with rose-colored lenses.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThe performance by the lead actress in this movie is Oscar worthy. End of.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsLoved this! A fantastic original installment to this trilogy. Weird colourful and splendid throughout.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsPearl is a film which will live or die on your tolerance for Goth's nitro-powered performance, in which she plays a character who only projects in extremes.
