Surprisingly well-rounded and polished, this movie (or pair of movies) stands out as a relative gem among the Pokémon movies. It does justice to the main themes of the Black/White era of Pokémon (Generation 5) - exploring the moral grey areas that had yet to be explicitly addressed by the franchise. Much like the games led the player to confront the seeming enslavement of Pokémon, the movie confronts the tensions between high-thinking idealism and day-to-day practicality. It's unfortunate this is so "late", now at number 14 of the long line of sequels; early fans would have been served well if this were Generation 2 rather than Generation 5. As always, the movies tend to require some familiarity with at least the anime, and preferably the games as well. The ending does tend to return to the more mundane simplistic roots, but it is forgivable after this movie finally delivers a few more shades of gray to the more mature fans.

Kind of confusing plot but otherwise enjoyable and heartfelt.

Kunihiko Yuyama lets the dragon force flow in Pokemon the Movie: Black - Victini and Reshiram.2 different versions of this film use 90 minutes to tell a similar story, which is quite fitting for the Pokemon franchise. The story is actually quite amusing in the early going. It's all fun and games with a number of Pokemon appearances and the opening credits popping in all the way at the 20 minute mark. The final third is where the film loses its steam. As expected it turns into a Pokemon legend fest while getting more dramatic in nature.Visually, the characters and Pokemon get the job done with the look and feel of a Japanese animation. The voice work is also nicely done, aside from the speaking voices of Zekrom and Reshiram.Pokemon the Movie: Black - Victini and Reshiram is easy to follow and finds its place in the Pokemon universe.

In some ways, it is more ambitious than previous films. The scale is grand as usual, and the effects are are all there, and having two different versions of the same film is something very fitting for Pokemon, of all franchises, to do. Even so, the story is so weak that even fans will be frustrated. There is no villain in this story, and the only thing being fought against is an inexplicable "Dragon Force" - no, not the band. Dragon Force in this movie is defined as "a plot device that does what it does to keep the story moving."

The one in which Ash becomes the first human in Pokeworld orbit. Decent enough for what it is, but not that great. Bad dialogue, same-old predictable story, Victini is disturbingly-cutesy Jirachi in another form, and so on. My first impressions of Iris and Cilan are that they are worse than their predecessors, though Brock's Best Before date expired a long time ago. Still hoping that maybe one day Nintendo will realize that they can make a Pokemon movie without creating a script so mediocre that even preschoolers can understand it at length.
