dark, deeply emotional, and a modern masterpiece.

There is a level of bleakness to Villeneuve's film that one usually only sees in the film cultures of Japan and South Korea - a willingness to take a narrative one step further than its audience might be comfortable taking.

BEST THRLLER IVE SEEN This movie is so amazing and the casting is perfect! Prisoners is one of those movies where you can’t stop watching and you just want to watch it forever. It’s also very realistic especially when they are beating people up and Jake Gyllenhaal look at the end of the film. Must see this movie!

The question of what you would do if a loved one, particularly your child, were to disappear or worse, get kidnapped, can tell you a lot about the person providing the answer. It’s the question at the heart of Prisoners, a dark mystery thriller about revenge and finding answers as your world seems to fall apart. Hugh Jackman gives easily his most intense and complex performance as an already slightly unstable man who’s pushed completely over the edge when his daughter is kidnapped. The lengths he goes to to get her back, and the methods he employs, are beyond what most of us would ever dream of, but that may be because we haven’t been in this situation before. The mystery at the film’s heart unfolds slowly and methodically, aided by Denis Villeneuve’s steady handed camerawork and beautiful attention to detail. With a wealth of incredible performances from the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano and Maria Bello, it’s a film that truly sucks you in and keeps you guessing right up until the end. The 2-and-a-half-hour runtime isn’t s problem because you never feel like the film is dragging its feet or going off on unnecessary tangents. Everything works in service of the story, and the cinematography and score combine to create a bleak atmosphere that gets progressively more hopeless as the story progresses. Its certainly not an easy watch, and it demands your full attention so you feel pretty exhausted when its over, but I promise the rough ride is more than worth your time.

Rewatched Prisoners last night — still one of the best mystery thrillers of the last decade. Denis Villeneuve really knows how to build tension without going over the top. Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal absolutely carried the film — raw, intense, and painfully human. The atmosphere is so grim and rainy you can practically feel the cold. And the story, while simple on paper, pulls you deeper with every scene. Interestingly, I couldn’t find it in my usual library, but thankfully I managed to stream it without much hassle. One quick switch and it showed up in the catalog — gotta love modern solutions. If you’re into dark, grounded thrillers with moral complexity, this one’s a must-watch.

Interesting, captivating and suspenseful first time around but very dull the second time through. Really loses its shine once you know the twist.
