Rebel Moon - Part One: Director's Cut

Those who were underwhelmed the first time around are likely to remain unimpressed.

One of the most quintessentially anthropocentric space fantasies on screen.

What I like about these two films were the things I liked about the original versions, a certain homage to those fantastical Frazetta illustrations... They're still long and self-indulgent, only now two hours more so.

Instead of grasping the seriousness of conquest and resistance as experienced in human history, Snyder makes everything into a humorless Heavy Metal cartoon.

Inside the aimlessness of Zack Snyder’s extended take on his already lengthy original film are scenes and moments of really satisfying science fiction. You just gotta get past all the space junk that surrounds them.

Packed with a raw sincerity that feels very human, “Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood” is a breathtaking exercise in immersive storytelling that uses every second of its 204-minute runtime to build a successful image system for its narrative.

What is hard R-worthy is the delicious ultra-violence, delivered in that precise detail that is Snyder’s trademark.

In an age of algorithmically generated sludge it's a miracle that Zack Snyder convinced Netflix to fund this kinky, gory and truly bizarre sci-fi epic. A cult classic in the making.
