This is a great movie. It's Denzel like we've never seen him before, but he gives an amazing performance regardless. I think the negative ratings are due to this not being a movie where Denzel shoots someone. This is an intellectual film. This is a thought-provoking story. This is not an action movie.

An important movie that's message is as real of an observation about life as I've ever seen. You can bounce from industry to industry and job to job trying to find something moral, yet it's possible that the basis of capitalist society leaves little room for your ethics. Your hand can thus feel forced, you might feel forced to make compromise, and yet you still may feel the consequences of your compromises. Nearly a folk tale in nature. How it lands with viewers as a film may range widely, but it's simply an impeccably written script.

I was so concentrated on the character of Denzel that only afterwards I realized how slow the film was but denzel the top

The movie devolves instead of evolving. Would have been a better movie watching it backwards and having a different ending.

I guess I go against the grain by being annoyed and frustrated with Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler (2014) but genuinely enjoying this movie, which has many viewers muddled and unimpressed. As usual, Denzel Washington turns in a solid performance. I liked this movie and will want to watch it again.

A compounding catastrophe of missed opportunities and baffling narrative choices. Washington's not bad, but the filmmakers have no idea what to do with his character.
  • Rating: 0.5 out of 5 stars
Total lack of genuine social commentary, making all the profound proclamations about vague notions of justice come across as totally hollow. For the same reason, it was hard to sympathize with the protagonists motivations. Everything seemed disjointed, random, weird and uncompelling because of this crucial whole at the core of a film about someone fighting for social justice - what was he actually fighting for beyond vague ideas of "social revolution" and plea bargain reform.

A movie that relies on the performance of it's lead. And Denzel delivers. A good flick.

It was so boring I couldn't keep watching but it might have gotten better I don't know.

An absorbing, though tragic, story of an idealistic lawyer who strays from the path of righteousness...
