Sherrybaby

, 57% Audience Score- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsIn Sherrybaby, Sherry Swanson (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has just been paroled from prison and, as per her parole officer, needs to stay straight. On top of this, her priority is to reconnect with a young daughter who she barely knows, a task that may be beyond her abilities. Gyllenhaal gives a career-defining performance as a woman on the verge of spiraling out of control, swinging wildly between tenderness, despair, vulnerability, and manic anger. Despite the fact that the narrative has little dramatic arc and there's little or no character-development (until the last couple of minutes) to speak of, Gyllenhaal's performance makes Sherry Baby worth watching.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsMaggie Gyllenhaal's fantastic performance brings to life a complicated character and it makes for an engaging film.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsMaggie Gyllenhaal is one of Americas finest actresses' and in " Sherry Baby " she pulls out a performance that is out wrenching, painful to watch meaning that her acting was very well done and is believable, I haven't seen her in this type of films, In my opinion at least she should of been nominated for an Oscar. So for that I give " Sherry Baby " a C.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsIn this quietly devastating drama sensitively directed by Laurie Collyer, Maggie Gyllenhaal renders a spellbinding performance as the eponymous former female convict coming to realise that rebuilding her life after prison proves to be so unimaginably hard.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsA complex and sad movie. Not something I would see again but I liked it.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsMaggie Gyllenhaal's painfully realistic and brave performance is really the only reason to see this movie.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsI've always enjoyed Maggie Gyllenhaal and this is one of her best performances up there with Crazy Heart. It delves into drug addiction well and is well written. I enjoyed the supporting performances from Giancarlo Esposito and Danny Trejo
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsGylenhaal's authentic performance captures the hopelessness of Sherry's situation flawlessly. However, the lack of follow through on plot lines leave some questions unanswered. While this would have emphasised the uncertainty of Sherry's future, the use of cliché to soften the blow of her narcissism clashes with the grittier and more realistic parts of the story. The contradiction prevents the conclusion from being taken as seriously as it needed to be.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsMaggie Gyllenhaal is a credit to her profession. 'Sherrybaby' made me see all the pain and struggles that people who have drug addictions, or other vices have to face. It was very touching and heart wrenching to see her try, succeed and fail and still keep going. You never know what led someone to the place where they are. This movie gives you a little taste of that.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsWishing for a better ending.
