This movie gives people a truthful perspective of kids who’ve experienced abuse and/or neglect. Worth seeing!! I could have easily been Jaden, or Grace. I am a follower of Jesus, and it’s only because of His mercy and grace in my life since I was 14 that I was not like them. I went through emotional, verbal and sexual abuse by father figures. I’m so thankful for Jesus, for loving mentors, and godly counselors who helped me to heal!!!

What an amazing film that highlights the realities of life in a truthful way. The writer is not writing from the outside looking in viewpoint but understands what these characters feel and are going through and allows the viewers of the film to as well. The acting was phenomenal by every person in the film. The movie was a minimalist and perfect all the way through. Every scene and line had a reason to be there and it created something amazing. More films need to study and take after this simplistic yet emotionally complex masterpiece that was created here.

The movie was great. There’s no taking away from that, but there is a cautionary tail within this movie, The counselor who identified with Jaden crossed every single professional boundary known except for sexual relations. Many people go into the mental health field because they have gone through their own trauma and are attracted by the opportunity to help others with theirs. This is exactly what the counselor in the movie did. She over identified with the Jayden, disclosed way to much personal information and became basically enmeshed with Jayden. While this movie had a happy ending, the counselor’s behavior in real life could have had devastating consequences for Jayden had the relationship gone south. I understand that the counselor wasn’t a therapist but I’m sure she was trained on professional boundaries. This is really just an aside for people who may be in therapy and take this movie as an appropriate therapeutic relationship between the counselor and Jayden. Other than my “therapist hat” view on the movie, I loved the movie.

I was really enjoying this film, and the care and love given to support these vulnerable young people. Then I was really disturbed to see all the daily medications being given out to the youth they were trying to help.

A movie that doesn't hide the impact of child abuse or how hard it is to heal. A tear jerker with compassion and empathy at its center.

This is one of the best, most moving movies I’ve seen in my entire life.. Impeccable cast, incredible execution, and completely genuine. It doesn’t rely on cliches, rather creating something unique and unforgettable.

10 years old and I remember liking this a lot Brie Larson, Rami Malek, and LaKeith Stanfield At a California care unit for at-risk teens Grace is a young counselor She helps a new hire get used to the kids' routine and daily lives Most of them are runaways or people with special needs A new member Jayden arrives and will only open up the way she knows how, Grace actually takes the time to sit down and listen to her but it isn’t her job to interpret tears Yet she's also remaining guarded confronting her own form of abuse she experienced, it makes her afraid of connections yet also fuels her drive to help the kids she sees over The staff members try to keep it together while the kids are begging for some worth to be recognized This is the point when Brie Larson finally starts to establish herself as an upcoming actress Director Destin Daniel-Cretton based much of this on his real-life experience working with a similar program I'm happy to say this resonated with me in so many ways Being an individual with a disability needing other people's help when things hurt so badly Hurt people hurt other hurt people but they can also help them, one can only bear the literal and metaphorical scars for so long without breaking down, and a safe environment can still be life-changing and that's all we really need, how can we hide our wounds without being embarrassed and put them in service of others? Brie Larson is absolutely amazing in this being somebody who can do the kind of work no one else can, she is the maternal refuge for young lost souls afraid to face their trauma Yet it gives us hope that we can be wounded healers Not only that but the film represents a paradigm shift in gender as well as diversity on screen Much of the cast in this would go on to bigger things thanks to Cretton The film works so well because it's emotional, dense, and really looks at a group of people that desperately need us to listen to them, it’s all about the triumph of the human spirit

Well this movie kicked me in my feels like none other. This movie was made by the first hand experiences of Crattons time with teens living these lived, which just makes it sadder because this is just life for many people growing up. For Brie’s first time leading a cast, she shows leading lady prowess here. Her emotions and reactions are so genuine and relatable that you can’t help but root for her through questionable actions because you can justify it in your mind. As depressing as this movie can get at times, I feel like it’s beautifully made and was made with love.
