Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas

If the animation under the direction of Tim Johnson and Patrick Gilmore wasn't so compelling, you could just close your eyes and listen.

Despite the cool monsters, the cute slobbering dog and Catherine Zeta-Jones's swashbuckling Marina, "Sinbad" comes off as surprisingly unmagical, with characters you only half care about.

Fun, if standard, animated adventure with battles, innuendo.

Handily outdoes [Treasure Planet], with bravura action set pieces, a surprisingly complex romantic triangle, and thoughtful exploration of moral issues and character.

Dreamworks animation has a lot to live up to after Shrek, but this wacky and high-spirited version of the Sinbad legend really isn't too bad.

It's certainly not the worst of DreamWorks, but I can see why it has been basically forgotten.

The quaintly hand-painted cityscapes of Syracuse are pretty. It would be nice if there was something going on in the foreground.

Despite its flaws, this is a fun well-acted piece of escapist fare with action, romance, adventure, and monsters galore.

A visually exhilarating mix of hand-drawn and computer-generated images that sets sail with a rather mediocre and clichd script.
