Space Oddity
audience Reviews
, 58% Audience Score- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsI loved it all. The music is insipid. The framing is all the same. The dialogue is basic. The property that produces the flowers is pretty. The characters' awkward reactions are far too long and recurrent. The young woman is charming. Kevin Bacon is there, in the background, for some reason, as an extra. He's moving flowerpots. He and his wife have no relationship until 20 minutes before the end. Eventually, she comes to him. The young actor who plays the main character is as nuanced as a wrench. He always dresses the same. He spends too much time looking in the mirror. Perhaps the intention was to be poetic. There's no soul. There was so much, so much to do with Simon Helberg. When films aren't good, I love to fast-forward. And in this case, I had a field day with it, because some of the moments are so embarrassing. I say I loved it because I feel scattered. I wanted a romantic comedy, all good feelings, but this one made my eyes bleed. Perhaps the hardest part to bear is that the guy who's supposed to conquer Mars does nothing all day, and you learn absolutely nothing about space exploration. On the other hand, it might make you want to reread “The Martian”. Fortunately, the ending is a happy one.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsThough it has Kevin Bacon and is directed by his wife Kyra Sedgwick, it simply does not cut it. It just has nothing to say. Guy wants to go to Mars, guy falls in love, guy decides not to go. The end!!! 2/10 points.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsI wasted my time on this. Only watched because Kyra directed it. Not a story I could relate to.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThe movie was heartfelt and showed a different side of family going through grief. It was an easy watch. Other reviews are trying to take this movie waaayyy too seriously. It does go on too much a climate change but that's about it. I wasn't watching this thinking it would be an oscar contender. It's just a nice movie that's worth watching. You feel what they're feeling and that what counts.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThe movie has a good plot, it's sweet, romantic, and has some comedy, some of the characters could have been developed a little bit more but as a whole, the idea was there. Especially the message that the writer is trying to share with Alex, is truly what this movie's meaning is. It was heart warming to watch.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsDespite Kyle Allen's (Alex) lackluster performance, the rest of the cast manages to salvage the movie with their best efforts in a predictable plot. The most rewarding aspect of the film is the development of Jeff and his daughter Liz's relationship, as Liz's tough exterior gradually melts away to reveal her love for growing flowers. However, with the looming threat of a ruined planet and inevitable destruction, it seemed likely that Alex would leave for Mars. The cover of David Bowie's iconic song, "Space Oddity," provides a glimmer of hope. But unfortunately, the final plot twist was predictable and underwhelming, resulting in a mediocre rating of 5.5/10, which can be rounded up to 6/10. Would I recommend this movie to watch? No. If you watch, would you like it? Not sure!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsGreat script with a great cast. Enjoyable film.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI thought this was a wonderful film with a lot of interesting things. It hits you heavy at the start with philosophical themes centered around life on a dying planet and themes of escapism, but is starkly contrasted by the family owning a beautiful, well-maintained garden, which leaves Kevin Bacon with a choice of leaving a planet and leaving it (the garden symbolizing the planet here) to die with no hope of being saved, or staying to preserve it and help it thrive even more than it already is. Tied in with all this is a classic, cheesy, and well-done rom-com that is both beautiful and funny in my opinion. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something to enjoy. If you want to hate it, you're going to find a way to, but if you just want to have a good time watching a good movie, this is a great option.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsLoved this movie, inspiring and heartfelt
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsA quiet little offering with good performances from all actors in a subtly touching story.
