Despite the fresh, young faces at the centre, a staleness looms large over SOTY2.

This class of 2019 has predictable beats, which is to be expected in an underdog story, but that it is so stilted is disappointing.

It is exasperatingly stale and unabashedly trashier.

Not even the flamboyance of the set-up or the sprawling sets, but the problem is that you feel cheated in investing in the characters. A letdown.

This sequel removes the unique timeline and narrative aspects for a dire, diluted, derivative teen drama that makes you question how anybody on the production team agreed to have this on their resume.

The script and the climax make it an overall dud.

Even discarded scripts must have more complexity than Student of the Year 2.

A stony-faced Tara Sutaria comes off as too self-conscious in her attempt to play Mia. It is Ananya Pandey who stands out among what is otherwise a mediocre cast.
