- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsAbsolute tripe. This falsifying and hijacking of history by young over educated under talented directors would be worrying if anyone actually watched their pointless ‘movies’ -but they don’t so it isn’t.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsWhile it was predicatable and incredulous at times, it was still enjoyable. The performances were good, the cinematography was beautiful and the ending was emotionally gratifying. I liked that it did not try to be too grand or overly-ambitious. Just a small story about ordinary people living through some extraordinary times. Well worth the watch.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI get that viewers enjoy this movie while the big name critics hate it. You know what I hate? Jaded movie critics. Too often when I rent a well reviewed film, I am disappointed with a cynical twist (think Where the Crawdads Sing, for instance). What a treat, then, to watch a movie that seduces me with erotic glimpses of love and lust while making me laugh with childhood antics. In the end, I cried because, yes, I love happy endings, which, sadly, seem to be in short supply in today's cinema. If you don't mind feeling good, for a change, you will enjoy Summerland.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsJessica Swales's directorial debut tells a charming and uplifting story through captivating visuals and stellar performances. Summerland is elevated by Gemma Arterton's strong lead, who carried the film with her earnest and quirky nature. Costar Lucas Bond was also phenomenal, and his portrayal of Frank made the character very likable. It's nice to watch a heartwarming film that fills viewers with hope and whose effect lingers after the credits roll.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsIt's hard to say much about this film without giving away potential spoilers but I really liked it overall. Its not what it initially seems. It was surprisingly poignant, that's all I'll say. There are some twists present and I didn't see them all coming. It's not as 'fluffy' as it may appear - well in one way it is but not in another. I'd recommend this film to anyone unsure about whether to see it, as there's more substance to it than first seems.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsAn unexpectedly excellent movie. Excellent acting, excellent plot, and an emotional impact that not all films convey. This is a good one.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsSuch a heartwarming watch. Recommend it a lot, especially if you're looking for an LGBTQ romance.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsI love Gemma Arteron, even when she's playing the role of a nasty witch. But I just felt everything was too cartoonish. The nice boy from London who gets picked on . The small village people who are really mean. And a nice racial mix of actors that would make sense in 2020, but not bloody likely in wartime England. I suppose every director is free to use any lens of perception they like, but for myself, I prefer period dramas to have more historical believability.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI loved this meaningful movie. The actors are terrific, and the screenplay is lovely and surprising. Yes, the plot is a bit contrived, but so enjoyable to watch, it didn't matter to me.
