Michaela Watkins and Charlie Gillespie are the perfect foils for each other. At first inhabitants of opposite emotional poles of Suze’s daughter, Brook (Sara Weisglass), Suze (portrayed brilliantly by Michaela Watkins) begins to slowly open to Gage (played perfectly by Charlie Gillespie) through a maternal portal when he is abandoned by his father in his hour of need. It’s a film that gives us hope about healing divides and embracing our common humanity.

It is a gem! Perhaps, one of the best movies I have seen in months.
It is reminiscent of movies by Nicole Holofcener. And one of her regulars, Michaela Watkins, takes centerstage here.
Similarities aside, this movie really pulls on your heart strings. Here, one cannot praise enough Charlie Gillespie for a brilliant performance.
If you need a break from the violence and body horror that's currently dominating cinemas, give this one a try.
You won't regret it.

Suze, is one of the greatest movies with the best actors. As always, Michaela Watkins is terrific. I have never missed anything she has ever been in !!! Charlie Gillespie is a revelation! He is a true talent with incredible range. He is a gift!!
There are no car chases, stabbings, or super heroes, just real people having real conversations and working on their relationships and evolving as human beings. I loved these characters and didn't want to let them go. Don't miss this movie! Please remember this movie for award season!!!! Not only is Michaela one of the best actresses..apparently a great cook too! What did she put in that grilled cheese?

This film was such a wonderful surprise. I always love Michaela Watkins so I know it’d be fun and funny, but the emotional depths this film strived for and achieved, made it much richer than a simple odd couple comedy. The writing, casting and directing provided a realism to each situation, while still providing laugh out loud moments. Charlie Gillespie’s performance also needs to be applauded. Michaela’s brilliant performance was no surprise, but Charlie took what appeared on the surface to be a Spicoli role, and delivered an emotional rollercoaster of a character.
I hope this film and the amazing performances in it get the attention and praise they deserve!

"Suze" tells the story of an empty-nest mother, Suze (Michaela Watkins), whose life takes an unexpected turn when her only daughter leaves for university. Left behind is Gage (Charlie Gillespie), the heartbroken ex-boyfriend she can't stand. Forced into an awkward caretaking role, Suze and Gage embark on a journey that evolves from mutual disdain to a genuine, heartfelt connection.
The film presents its unique premise effectively, steering clear of predictable narratives and engaging the audience with its fresh take on coping with change and unlikely companionship. The storyline flows logically, keeping viewers invested in the characters' development and the unfolding of their relationship.
Michaela Watkins delivers an outstanding performance as Suze, capturing the nuances of a mother grappling with an empty nest and personal growth. Her character's evolution is portrayed with authenticity and depth. Charlie Gillespie shines as Gage, bringing charm and vulnerability to the role of the heartbroken ex-boyfriend. His portrayal is both funny and endearing, and his singing adds a delightful layer to his character.
The chemistry between Watkins and Gillespie is palpable, making their interactions feel authentic and engaging. Their dynamic evolves naturally, contributing significantly to the overall feel of the movie and offering a sweet and genuine depiction of an unlikely friendship.
"Suze" explores central themes such as coping with change, dealing with toxic relationships, and finding support in unexpected places. The film thoughtfully comments on family dynamics, highlighting that sometimes, those closest to us can be sources of toxicity. These themes are woven seamlessly into the narrative, enhancing the story without feeling forced.
While the pacing maintains interest throughout, there are moments that might feel uncomfortable, particularly certain intimate scenes involving Suze. However, these instances are overshadowed by the film's strengths, including its character development and meaningful dialogues.
Emotionally, the movie leaves a lasting impression. Standout scenes, such as Gage's heartfelt monologue about his struggles with depression, offer depth and provoke thoughtful reflection. The ending is satisfying, showcasing personal growth and the healing power of unexpected friendships.
Overall, "Suze" is a film that resonates with warmth and sincerity. Its strongest aspects lie in its unique storyline, compelling performances, and the authentic chemistry between the leads. While it doesn't need to try hard to be funny, its genuine moments of humor and emotion make it a worthwhile watch.
I highly recommend "Suze" to viewers who enjoy heartfelt dramas that explore personal growth and unconventional relationships. The film beautifully illustrates how helping others can lead to one's own healing and self-discovery.
