- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsAnimation looks great. Storytelling wasn't great. The whole movie just didn't make a lot of sense. The story seems forced. Just couldn't connect with it. It pales in comparisons with 5 cm and Your Name.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsI'm not even a big fan of director “Makoto Shinkai”. But I’ve always had the opportunity to follow and enjoy his works, such as “Your Name” and “Weathering with You”. When it was announced that this movie was coming out, I was eagerly looking forward to watching it. This movie has an interesting plot , but there are some points that I think don't make sense. The story of "Suzume" begins with the protagonist "Suzume" meeting the mysterious young man "Sota", who has the task of closing the mysterious “doors” that have appeared across Japan. These doors are paths that bring disaster into the world. The two of them embark on a journey to close these doors and face many mysterious events. Along the way, Suzume learns about her past, pain, and emotional growth. What makes the story engaging is following the relationships of the characters, and the movie incorporates real events from Japan, making it easy for us to imagine. There are parts of the story where the audience can guess what’s going to happen next, and I still think that going on a journey with a strange man lacks strong enough reasons to justify it. However, what makes the movie still addictive is the emotional depth and the characters’ growth. The mood of the movie The script in this movie still carries Makoto Shinkai’s unique style. Even though the plot is simple, like a journey, the scenes are filled with emotion, feelings, and mysteries. The characters' lines are profound, and the overall script covers a variety of emotions, from funny and heartwarming scenes to intense dramatic moments that are well conveyed to the audience. The character that is not very overblown. True to the author’s design style, the characters are not as sharply distinguished as in other animated films. I feel this makes it easier to relate to the characters. From the protagonist’s story, the movie allows us to follow the growth of both Suzume and Sota, and there are mysteries surrounding both of them. There are supporting characters in the story, though they don’t have many scenes, their roles are important for creating emotions and showing the growth of the protagonists. Another key character is the cat named Daijin, which is very well designed and cute, becoming a viral sensation on the internet. The visuals and sound are very good things in this movie. I admit that the plot is very engaging, but the visuals and sound are the highlights of Makoto Shinkai’s direction. For me, it didn’t disappoint at all and was worth the wait. These two aspects are what complete the story, with beautiful visuals, magnificent effects, vibrant colors, and perfect composition. The soundtrack by RADWIMPS stands out and helps set the mood for each scene, especially in scenes related to loss and hope. Scene and costume design The design of the scenes and locations in the story is inspired by real places in Japan, giving it a realistic feel. The costumes of the characters are simple yet effectively convey their identities. This simplicity, paired with real locations in Japan, is a small gimmick that fans of the director can enjoy by recognizing the places. It’s a fun touch for those following this director’s work. A small part that I think is still missing. Since this movie was adapted into an animated film for theaters, there’s a time constraint, so some parts of the story are condensed, and certain points aren’t explored further. In conclusion If you enjoy animations with beautiful visuals, great music, and a heartwarming story, this movie is definitely worth watching. I recommend watching it in theaters or with a good sound system, as it enhances the emotional experience.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsFrom the creator of Your Name(2015/16), this brilliant (but unoriginal) masterpiece mixes The Wizard of Oz(1939, by some scenes), Hailey's on It(2023), Doraemon between other resources with maestry
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA beautiful Japanese animated film that blends coming-of-age themes with a road-trip narrative. The animation is stunning, immersing us in a fantastical and spiritual journey set in modern-day Japan. This journey serves as a subjective reflection of what the protagonist is going through emotionally at that stage of her life. At its core, the film explores the theme of opening up and having difficult conversations with loved ones as a means of healing from past trauma and grief. This theme remains central throughout the story, giving depth to the protagonist’s experiences. Structurally, the film presents some minor issues. The plot is set in motion by a sudden romantic connection, where the protagonist seems to fall in love after just meeting another character. While they do get to know each other, the events unfold over just a few days, making their motivations somewhat difficult to fully relate to. This applies to other characters as well, some who join the journey later on without a clearly established reason. The first half of the film can feel a bit repetitive, but a clear midpoint shifts the story in a slightly different direction, keeping things engaging. Ultimately, the film prioritizes symbolic and emotional storytelling over strict narrative logic. It leans into "anime logic" for some plot points, requiring a degree of suspension of disbelief. While these choices might not work for everyone, they feel intentional rather than problematic. Overall, it’s a beautiful, emotionally resonant film that I’d highly recommend, especially for fans of the genre.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThe animation is incredible, and the way the anime shows natural disasters is a masterpiece
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis is one of my favorite anime movies ever. Its story is incredible and heartwarming, and the art style and visuals are truly breathtaking.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsI really liked this movie. I liked the visuals, the messaging, the story, and the soundtrack. It was really touching at certain points and really gave me something to think about. However, the only reason I’m giving it four stars is due to the plot. I felt like the plot fell a bit flat at times and overall could’ve used a bit more nuance and depth. I also would’ve liked a bit more background information regarding Souta. Such as how his family became “Closers”, his own life background, other than just “I’m a teacher in training”, etc. But other than that it was an enjoyable movie that I would watch again.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsMe encantó es una película hermosa tanto visualmente como narrativamente me encantaron los personajes y la recomiendo muchísimo
