Truly gripping, the lead deserves an Oscar! A must see film.

This struck me as a bit of a combination in terms of the plot and setting/circumstances of both The Revenant and The Book Thief (and also slightly of another perhaps less well known film called 'Another Mothers Son'). Its undoubtedly a bleak watch - at times there's not much dialogue (which, for me, were subtitles given its partly in Norwegian, German and Saami, although there is some English, I wouldn't say its the main language spoken throughout, I consider this more of a world cinema title) and often we can hear the obvious extreme discomfort of the titular character, having to try to cope with their injuries while evading re-capture, by befriending locals. For a fair number of scenes, there is quite dark (if much at all) lighting, so we can't always make out everything going on (for example, in scenes set at night) but then for some that may be a bit of a blessing if you wouldn't like to be subject to every detail. I'd certainly say that this is an effectively atmospheric film regardless. However, lighting aside - it does feature some scenes depicting bloody injuries, although I wouldn't say its over the top in terms of extreme graphic detail but if your particularly squeamish about seeing or hearing people in distress with bloody injuries, then you may well prefer to not watch this, of course. I certainly thought it was an interesting story - I like seeing how people with very few options deal with being in the place, with the people, they find themself surrounded by and what happens to them. Of course the fact its based on a true story made it even more compelling for me and I also liked some of the landscape shots/cinematography. Overall, yes I would recommend this film.

I thought I'd like this movie better...I'm a fan of good WWII cinema, and this not only had a great based-on-true-story theme, but it had good reviews. The problem, as other reviewers indicated, is that multiple scenes are just drawn out sooooo long. I know they tried to instill the harrowing close-to-death aspect of the story, but after a handful of scenes pretty much the same except for the setting (near death in abandoned cabin, under rock, under an other rock, etc), you just lose patience with the plot. But what really got my goat (SPOILER ALERT!), was the end, where after you sit through scene after scene of near death experiences, the guy finally gets to Sweden, and then they pretty much just cut it there...another face close-up, then boom, it's three months later and the guys recovered. Yeah, it's arty, and I guess you're supposed to imagine what it was like to be finally saved, but after leaving pretty much nothing to the imagination for 2 hours, to say it's anti-climactic is an understatement.

Was kind of hoping our hero would end up with the sister of the guy that helped him get over the mountain.

Disturbingly brutal but uplifting at the same time. Excellent acting across the board. Subtitles do not detract from the emotions of the actors. The guy who plays the fanatical and murderous SS Officer Stage is truly scary. Not for the squeamish.
