An uninspired adaptation of David Ebershoff's novel which blends together two stories, one from the 19th century and one from the present. In the adaptation, the 19th century is diminished and the present-day one tweaked and twisted. A gay plot element is eliminated, as if polygamy is safe to scorn, but homosexuality is too horrible to even deal with. Good, authentic looking polygamy costumes and hairdos and appealing Canadian rural scenery. One of the characters looks eerily like the current Republican presidential candidate. If this topic interests you, watch the movie before the book, or just read the book and forget the movie. For hard core fans of polygamy movies. There are some cases of murder in polygamous sects, but most are of women, not of men, by the way.

Its amazing how religion makes people believe crazy stuff. If only people could see their region through the eyes of someone on the outside.

Really bad. The book was fantastic, but the movie really fell short. There was an unequal focus on the current story vs. the story set in the 1800's. Not only was the focus off, but the acting was terrible, and the whole storyline of the main character being gay is left out.

Wow. This wasn't what I was expecting. I knew this film was about polygamy but I wasn't counting on what they would show or not show. This wasn't the best film but I did enjoy the film. It was based on the book by David Ebershoff. The book might be better than the film only I haven't read the book. This film isn't a pro or con against polygamy but it does show how a polygamist Mormon sect works. This I found interesting, not saying if it's based off the truth or if it is a fictional portrayal of how the sect works. It is an intriguing film. www.what-to-watch.com
