The Book of Life's visually stunning animation and overall charm helps make up for its by-the-numbers story.

"The Book of Life" is a visually breathtaking animated adventure that brings the spirit of Día de los Muertos to life with rich cultural flair. With its vibrant, puppet-like animation style and a heartfelt story of love, courage, and destiny, the film offers a refreshing departure from conventional animated fare. Though the narrative follows familiar beats, its charming characters, lively humor, and inventive soundtrack keep it engaging. While not without its flaws, "The Book of Life" is a uniquely artistic and emotionally resonant film that stands out in the animation landscape.

I can’t get past how inappropriately and unnecessarily sexy the tour guide is. Three minutes into the movie and they’re teaching little girls that if they hypersexualize themselves they can manipulate a man into doing things he doesn’t want to do. It’s so tired. Can we be more aware and do better?

This film is action filled and heartwarming. The most impressive part of the film is definitely its art style though. The movie uses bright colors that add life to the settings particularly the land of the remembered and it’s packed with all sorts of little details like the character Xibalba has so many skulls all over his design which make sense since he is death physical and spiritual .The cartoon proportions also work well the overall art style is very unique and really creates a nice atmosphere. I also really liked La Muerte's very bright and vibrant while still including skulls which makes sense since she represents the souls living on after death. The entire land of the remembered is very lively and spectacular. The designs of the character’s almost look like stop motion figures with the level of detail and the fact photo realism and proper proportions aren’t applied to the 3d models. This really works because the story is being told through the framing device of wooden figures and a storybook. They also added wooden details to the characters to make that clear. In terms of the story itself it’s not reinventing the wheel and does utilize some tropes but it’s enjoyable and exciting. The characters are fun and likable, the voice cast did a good job so it’s easy to get invested in the touching tale. The pacing could be improved, perhaps some parts are a little slow and it may have been nice to spend a bit more time in the underworld. The movie hands ideas and messages like generational change, self truth, perseverance, compassion, selfishness, honor, and courage. So it very much deals with human nature and imparts some messages to the audience and these messages work together pretty well though some are focused on more than others. So I would definitely recommend it for kids, it's engaging while still teaching important lessons. The film handles the idea of death very well and in a very interesting way touching on the idea of keeping loved ones' memories alive and honoring them while still writing your own story. The use of the kids at the museum throughout the story is a little random and doesn’t make complete sense but it isn’t too distracting. The use of cover music while the choice doesn’t make complete sense from a story perspective, the music works well with a mix of original songs. I remember watching this as a kid and thinking the songs were from the movie. This film is definitely worth a watch. It's visually very unique and the story is fun and enjoyable.

The ending felt to much like endgame, it dragged out after beating Chakal longer than Return of the kings, the movie as a whole has the same plot as coco, and the final fight gets hyped up longer then the departure of a Disney cruise the only redeeming quality is that I like everything previously stated The movie should have ended when Manolo got crushed by the bell, that would have shown that being a Sanchez isn't just fighting bulls, but being able to be selfless
