The Breadwinner
audience Reviews
, 88% Audience Score- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsAn excellent movie. Like Schindler's List, there's beauty to the story, but it can be very hard to watch at times. The sparse style of the animation lends itself to the narrative, but might be part of why this movie is woefully uknown to many. This is movie adults should see, but would probably be disturbing to children.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars"The Breadwinner" follows a family of five in 2001 Afghanistan. It focuses on the hardships and trials that come with trying to survive in this hostile community. The movie is perpetually dark and depressing. Not shying away from the darker realities that go on in the world. Breadwinner gives a good dose of perspective for anyone complaining about mundane "first world problems". This movie reminds me a lot of the Don Bluth movies of the 1980's. It focuses a lot on the struggles of our protagonist, which makes their quest to overcome all the more triumphant. I love the family dynamic in the story. The sisters may bicker at times, but they also share some very sweet and tender scenes together. Breadwinner teaches that, even if you don't know what to do, do what you can, and be kind. There isn't much in the way of levity, so all the sadness can wear on an audience. Without getting into spoilers, I feel the ending was a little rushed. I'm usually all for an abrupt finale, but I could have used one more scene in this film. They will occasionally switch animation styles as the characters tell a story, and if there is any comedic relief that is where it comes in. It makes a point to say that there is a power in the stories we tell. And there certainly is power in this story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsliterally one of if not the best movie ive ever seen, its one of those movies that can help portray/make you understand something(abt the characters, place, conflict, relationships etc)so easily and with little to no words. the characters are so well ritten. both art styles are beautiful. the colours themselves often help bring to light sertain aspects of the story which is really interesting. overall a masterpiece of a movie
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsit nice recommend very muchy
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsUn film toccante e ottimo per ricordare gli eventi orribili in Afganistan nel 2001 capolavoro da vedere assolutamente.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsNot a fan of the voice acting and trauma pile seen through an orientalist lens.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThis is a sad story - a sobering one about life in Taliban controlled Afghanistan. It makes clear the harsh living realities for women in the time its set (2001). The animation is certainly beautiful - I love the old fashion 2d feel of it as well as the great range of colours. Its really quite an engrossing watch. I would highly recommend this film.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsPretty ignorant, but what can be expected from Jolie. And hypocritical considering her skeletons. If anyone wants to know about her time in Chiang Mai, I am happy to tell them. Suffice to say that people of a certain sex were bought to her room and left quite terrified.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsVery provocative and profound. Good family watching that allows your own imagination to teach lessons in fact, history, life and compassion.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsAnother super flick from Cartoon Saloon! After watching and enjoying the Irish Folklore Trilogy from the studio, I simply had to check out their one other film to date: 'The Breadwinner'. I actually think that's kind of a boring title to be honest, but thankfully the film is anything but. It follows the lines that you'd, or at least I'd, expect given the subject matter, but it still adds extra weight to the story alongside plenty of heart. Saara Chaudry leads the voice cast excellently, with those behind the young Canadian putting in solid performances too. The animation, as usual for this Irish animation company, is exquisite. I'm eager to check out Cartoon Saloon's next film, with 'My Father's Dragon' due out at some point this year. Four films in, they haven't put a foot wrong with their releases yet. This 2017 production is very good - 8/10 from me, but it's a borderline 9/10 tbh.
