The Caine Mutiny

Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize novel, The Caine Mutiny, has been made into a stirring film by Stanley Kramer.

Both Johnson and MacMurray are bound to win special accolades for their offbeat portrayals in the adaptation of the Herman Wouk novel.

I think the audience of millions created by the book will not be disappointed. Those who are innocent of the troubles aboard the Caine will find this version of them engrossing.

Just enough of the central situation is preserved to keep the film dramatically on its feet

Bogart plays, on the screen, the scenes that are only talked about in Nolan’s stage trial, and in playing- the more definitive version of Queeg he achieves a remarkably detailed and sensitive performance.

The Caine Mutiny is a finely rounded, compact piece of work, intelligently written, admirably acted and directed with the minimum of fuss.

It is to the everlasting credit of the motion picture industry... that in recent months there have been so many excellent translations into screen terms of great books. Standing preeminently high in that category [is] The Caine Mutiny.

Not so well-knit and forceful as From Here to Eternity, the picture still has plenty of punch.

It’s a brilliant, beautifully acted job.
