The Comeback Trail

I laughed unashamedly throughout the entire film. But your mileage may vary.

The Coen brothers would have worked wonders here, but the director and co-writer George Gallo (he co-wrote Bad Boys) drives everything into increasingly silly sight gags...

I won't risk calling this movie a miracle, but if this year has left you in desperate need of a good laugh, look no further.

It's a premise that could have produced a few laughs, but the chutzpah that went into Midnight Run has gone missing and everybody -- director and actors -- clearly feel they have to work very hard to make it hang together.

The film, starring three Oscar winners, sat on the shelf for nearly five years. We weren’t missing much.

The Comeback Trail might appeal to the TCM crowd if it had a tighter screenplay and better balanced its messy blend of sophisticated themes and lowbrow humor. But it’s little more than a bunch of aging fellas farting around without much direction.

Amid its parade of stale and cartoonish gags, the film’s awkward attempt to pay tribute to a bygone Hollywood era is peppered with references to big-screen classics we’d rather be watching.

The star-studded cast can’t save this incompetent would-be comedy that doesn’t even understand how movies are made.

It's my hunch that the original was marginally more rewarding because expectations would have been lower without big name stars who agreed, for some reason or another, to take part in this remake.
