The Curse of the Werewolf
audience Reviews
, 58% Audience Score- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsDo you mean to tell me Hammer Films only produced one werewolf movie? I was surprised to hear this entertainment factoid. I liked the movie. And I don't know why I was surprised to see Oliver Reed in the film because I considered him a "dramatic thespian" instead of a blue-collar actor somewhere in the back of my mind. I don't know how that thought got stuck in my head.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsAbove average werewolf movie courtesy of Hammer, A surprising amount of backstory before we even get to Olvier Reed as title monster, Reed is commanding in the lead, Movie has memorable werewolf makeup, and a startling amount of gore for a 1961 movie, I liked the exciting finale.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsA Solid Underrated Horror Film & a Hammer Classic. Pretty much everything about his is well done. This relies a lot on suspense and drama rather than horror and gore until about the last 10 minutes. Really the only main issues is none of the characters have too much depth to them including the main werewolf who doesn't even become the main character until mid second hlaf of the film. However the order of events following that all flows in a logical fluid manner. The acting also can be a bit campy but in a good way with some cool chilling dialouge and the style of the acting at times is very much silent film style at points which gives it a unique identity. The special effects are solid but not as well done and the sets aren't as memorable as the original Wolf Man. The ending is solid and there isn't much dialouge either and has good buildup and some cool stunts. Granted you don't even see the werewolf actually until the end as most of it is implied and relies much more on having your imagination fill in the blanks but its well done nonetheless. If your looking for a gore fest this isn't for you but if your a fan of Hammer Films, Wolf Man in general, any actors in this, or well done campy Horror this is something to definitely check out. A Hidden Gem.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsA handsomely mounted Hammer production, with a blazing turn from a young, imposing Oliver Reed as the titular werewolf.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsAbove average Hammer script could well have been written by the Brothers Grimm. This could be one of the top period pieces of the early 1960's - as well as a horror film. This film is nearly stolen by Yvonne Romain as the mute woman.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsDamn fine updating of the classic Monster tale. Reed is great in the role, and following the whole life of this character makes it all the more tragic. Love the commentary on the mistreatment of the working class.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsMediocre Hammer movie that's entertaining and colourful enough but short on scares.
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsEl amor no cura la licantropía
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsDecent werewolf film from Hammer, there only take on the horror staple, starring Oliver Reed as the titular monster. It isn't great, but it has t's moments. It does sport a good performance from Reed, as well as strong wolf make-up, and that great classic Hammer visual look. The story isn't spectacular, but it is a mostly solid Werewolf effort.
