The Dirty Dozen
audience Reviews
, 90% Audience Score- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsOld school war film that I hated. The story is just not any good. Except for maybe the first 30 minutes when they are recruiting and training the men. The acting really is the only thing I enjoyed. Cassavettes is especially good. But the directing by Aldrich is terrible.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsThis movie is absolutely fantastic. I love the way Reisman earned their respect throughout the film. That final mission at the end of the film also kicked so much butt. I genuinely loved every part of it, what a fantastic script with a bunch of great actors. My only issue is, sometimes it feels as if it’s dragging and it’s easy to get bored in those moments. But if you wait out the boring parts you get some genuinely great scenes after. 4.5/5 stars. Probably top ten war movies ever made.
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsYes, it's All Star cast packed 'em into the theaters during the Johnson Administration, but this overly long and quite preposterous tale doesn't hold up. The plot includes a ridiculous war game that merely pads the running time past two and a half hours to pretend it's worthy of being called "epic." The actual mission isn't terribly convincing, either. It's basically a "Great Escape" wannabee, but this is thin gruel. The 60's saw too many of these over-the-top fictionalized versions of wartime action that actually devalued the suffering and sacrifice of the men who served.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsOne of the best WWII movies, with an all star cast. Lee Marvin, in his greatest role, leads the Dirty Dozen to victory and salvation. With Telly, Bronson, Sutherland, Jimmy Brown, Earnest - absolutely superb.
- Rating: 3.5 out of 5 starsmost of this movie is good its just to slow
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsI finally watched the Dirty Dozen again after so many yrs gone by and for only my 2nd time ever. 1st time ever in high def! Pros and cons to report... Some really silly death scenes and some suspect acting by some but Lee Marvin was so strong start to finish. Plus those Nazis in a boat!, so silly! And some really bad driving too by some other Nazi guys was also so darn silly! They really focused mostly on all that training and such for like an hr and 40 mins and then they were finally ready for battle and some of the silliness took place which was a letdown after waiting so long for the storming in on the Nazi castle. I have to go with a 7 out of 10 here, (almost a 7.5), and yes I did factor in the release yr of 1967 and long before any CGI which I am not a fan of. I prefer old fashioned special effects and this movie did deliver in this regard. So long in running time but worth the watch for those who have not yet seen! For me though this is one and done as so many other titles to get through for the rest of my life. Jim Brown was also pretty good and so was Bronson. Does Sutherland always have to play a putz? Like in Kelly's Heroes too??
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThe Dirty Dozen, 1967 is an excellent War motion picture directed by late Robert Aldrich...based on a novel, with the same name, by late Erwin Nathanson...with good castings, says Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson as well as Donald Sutherland... full of fun during the Wargames scripts and a tragic ending...
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsA Classic War Movie. The acting is good across the board which is impressive considering there is so many characters to pack in. Lee Marvin is the highlight easily and more than anything this is HIS film. That being said the one problem that nagged me was it's very clear over half the film is developing the characters and forming a bond with all of them and the film does this solidly. However some are more developed than others and a handful have no personality really at all and just blend in. Some also have more quirks than real personalities also but they all are likeable by varying degrees. The cinematography is very well done in this with great sets and very well done special effects, some camera shots are weird but most are well framed and capture the dirty dozens emotions well. The music is solid but not phenomenal. This film is very well edited. The Pacing is very well done also with plenty of humorous moments balanced out with building tension and having a very well done spectacle ending. The only real complaint is this film doe everything very well but not phenomenally. It's got a very original idea and embraces the early New Hollywood ideas of Anti Heroes. Anyone who is a war genre fan or any fan of any actors in this should easily give this a try.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsThis movie was done very well, and the the best things about it were the characters and how unique they were and how well they played off of each other, the scenes with them in the training camp, and the final battle scene at the mansion. The movie kept me entertained and this is one of the better WWII action movies I've seen (aside from Where Eagles Dare, the Great Escape, and Saving Private Ryan). They don't make movies like these anymore but I'm happy that they had the ambition to when they did in the 60s and 70s!!
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsA little cheesy by today's standards but is pretty clever and entertaining for the time it was released. It's also got a supurb cast.
