The Electrical Life of Louis Wain
audience Reviews
, 70% Audience Score- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsMade me want to physically run out of the room screaming. A perfect watch for those who think autism makes "innocent" whimsical eccentrics and are prepared to ignore that this is the private life of a real person with real mental health issues. The storybook style narrator, overly modern mannerisms, and quick cut shots do not create the "messy humanness" sharp desired, but made it impossible to be immersed in the film, period or believe that any of the characters were not just actors with a warped perception of mental health.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsA biopic as whimsical as its subject, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain paints a vivid picture of the eccentric artist's personal life and career.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 starsI liked how they included lots of what he did in his life. But the way it was filmed really put me off. Had to skip some scenes. As per usual you don't know if the main character died at the end so you have to guess he died in a place he loved.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThe Electrical Life of Louis Wain is absolutely stupendous and one of the very best biopics that I have ever seen. It is very moving, engaging, and cathartic, especially in terms of death and mental illness. I highly recommend this film 9.9/10 imo
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars"The Electrical Life of Louis Wain" is a bio pic about Louis Wain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose drawings helped redefine the cultural perspective on cats. As the movie begins, they do an excellent job of introducing the audience to the character of Louis Wain. He packs his day with so many different random adventures. He goes straight from drawing a dog with both hands to a boxing match to going swimming. He is a man with about 7 different part time jobs at the same time. The first third of this movie is really good. Cumberbatch has terrific chemistry with the rest of cast and the scenes between him and Claire Foy are just adorable. If the movie had just focused up on this time period of Wain's life, I think we could of had a great, albeit a bit cliched, movie. Unfortunately, there is a second half of this movie. Biography movies have a difficult job to do. Since most things in real life do not follow a three-act structure, it is up to the writer/director to create a story that feels complete. As opposed to focusing on a singular event in Wain's life like MLK in "Selma" or Lincoln in the movie "Lincoln" the movie goes for a big picture point of view. This makes the movie drag in certain parts and begins to feel pretty repetitive. In short, the movie overstayed its welcome. I found myself looking at the clock as the third act came around, just waiting for the movie to end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis was such a great piece of art! Benedict Cumberbatch gives such a driving performance with such depth! The uses of symbolism and the characters fit in perfectly with the message! If you’re looking for a resolving film then I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed! It teaches us to look at the world as the beautiful thing it is!
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsQuite boring, almost fell asleep.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 starsThe bizarre little stylistic flourishes (i.e. the subtitles for the cats' meowing) do elevate what is a fairly traditional biopic.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis movie! An unexpected surprise! Benedict Cumberbatch is spectacular as Louis Wain. Who is Louis Wain? I know right? This film has comedy/drama and darn it, it even made me cry. Watch it now and thank me later.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI have to admit, this film has languished on my watchlist for many months, and it was only the threat that it was soon to be deleted from the accomodating streaming service that I decided to watch it. This is the kind of film that you will either love or hate. Usually, I am in the latter category when it comes to 'arty' films, but, surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Olivia Colman's narration transforms it into a bit a of a fairytale, and the impressive cast and cameos adds to it's charm. Charming - an excellent adjective to describe this film. Charming and emotional, driven by a beautiful but tragic life story. 5 stars from me.
