- Rating: 4 out of 5 starsSteven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans is a quiet act of self-reckoning, a filmmaker gently turning the camera on his own beginnings, asking what it means to see the world too clearly, too soon. The film follows young Sammy Fabelman, a thinly veiled Spielberg surrogate, as he falls in love with the magic of cinema while stumbling through the emotional fault lines of his family. His camera becomes not just a tool for creation but a silent witness to the unspoken tensions between his brilliant, fragile mother (Michelle Williams) and his pragmatic, distant father (Paul Dano). What makes The Fabelmans special is its refusal to mythologize. This isn’t the grand tale of a genius-in-the-making; it’s the story of a boy slowly realizing that to be an artist is also to be a watcher, and that watching comes at a cost. Sammy’s gift for seeing connections, patterns, and hidden truths distances him from the very people he loves. Spielberg handles this personal material with surprising restraint and grace. The film is shaped less by plot than by feeling, by small domestic moments, awkward silences, bursts of joy, and quiet betrayals. It’s a meditation on how family shapes the artist, and how art, in turn, disturbs the comfort of family. There’s melancholy here, but also warmth. The Fabelmans suggests that while seeing too much can break illusions, it can also build understanding. It’s a rare coming-of-age story that lingers not on triumph, but on the bittersweet price of growing up with eyes wide open.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsA film taht didnt catch my attention until 10 minutes in or so, that has know become one of my fauvorite films. As always, Spielberg sensitivity is what makes this tale about a boy that wants to make films, something bigger than life, and incredibly enjoyable. The way Spielberg portraits the relationship of his parents, is truly emotionally mature, and sad to watch. The cherry on the pies is the ending, instantly iconic, with a really funny David Lynch. Overall a truly joy of a film, that I think deserved more recognision.
- Rating: 4.5 out of 5 starsA wonderful introspective telling of Steven Spielbergs upbringing through the eyes of Spielberg himself. Fantastic!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis has became one of my favorite movies of all time
- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsTwo stars because I like Paul Dano and the other guy's performance. But really, this is a vanity piece. We hang in there because we know it's Steven Spielberg's life and believe it has to get better, there has to be a deeper message. It doesn't and there isn't.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 starsI will keep my review short and to the point To me the film divides into two parts Part 1 the family in the east coast 1955 to 1961 Part 2 The California chapter 1962- 1966 The first part is a snooze-I found myself checking my cell phone and wishing I was on the street eating a Falafel (I was in Tel Aviv) The second part is way better with riveting tensions and dramas planting the seed of the tree that will dominate the movie landscape the genius we know as Steven Spielberg- Colorful, dramatic albeit the antisemitic sentiments expressed toward him by his college mates was way over the top and resembles more 1935 Germany than 1964 California. (Calling him Bagelman etc and harming him physically) that really did not happen in the sunshine state at that era as far as I experienced. Now my personal feeling acting wise no one shines, Personally Michelle Williams who plays the mother is an actress I always hated, an ugly duckling with 1966 Guiding Light acting style and the personal charm of a Viennese Schnitzel (She once played M Monroe in a bio epic a casting decisionI I find criminal) Williams is hard to watch especially here. The boy who played S Spielberg was OK, Daddy was good as well All and all rent it and it will not be a huge regret if you do not like. I am not surprised this soufflé failed to rise and tanked at the box office
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsI love this movie so much! The music, the cinematography, the actors are divine! It is a masterpiece and a gift from Steven to be so courageous and kind and generous to share his story with us. A MUST SEE!
