Taking a more racially-charged approach to the franchise formula, The First Purge has some awesome bone-crunching action and a couple great performances in a decently directed film with a mediocre script.

I don't understand why they felt the need for multiple story's to be told. They should of only told either Isaya's story or Demetrius's story. You can tell they forgot parts of Isaya's story when writing it because they forgot about Skelitor until the end when they thought oh yeah we should probably end his story now. I feel like a story about a drug ring during the purge could of been really cool. I don't know why they decided to make a drug ring leader able to defeat an entire army basically single handedly without at least having his back story being ex military. Even if that was the case it would still be very unlikely that he would of been able to defeat an army on his own. The Isaya story could of been fun as well if they focused on Skelitor being this crazed killer murdering everyone and trying to kill Isaya. But we only got that for the first 10-15 minuets of the purge starting.

Quite disappointing and forgettable for such an interesting concept. Everything about the movie seemed quite lazy and basic. Certainly wouldn't recommend to anybody; don't waste your money or your time.

The First Purge is a serviceable prequel, but ultimately it's forgettable.

An opportunity completely missed. Lazy plot. Lazy dialogue. Poor soundtrack. No atmosphere. No pulse-raising tension. Adds nothing to this unique franchise but instead relies on obvious racial tropes to try to sell its point. The Purge series should, on the surface, be about mindless violence meted out by anyone on anyone but with a seriously dark, almost fantasy-like, edge. This is just crass and mindless. Please remake this origin story and actually make it say something.

This movie failed to provide the essential foundation that a prequel should have. The world-building was hollow and not well thought out. The lore given to us to describe the literal first ever Purge feels so mediocre. The newly introduced characters lacked depth. Instead of well-rounded motivations, the characters acted impulsively, driven by flimsy goals. The dialogue was consistently weak, filled with cringe-worthy Marvel-style one-liners, and lacked any meaningful subtext. The story progressed through dull, uninspired conversations that did little to justify the characters' actions or advance the plot. The acting was terrible, which only added salt to the wound that was the terrible dialogue. The Purge franchise didn’t need this movie. It feels out of place and, quite frankly, boring. The fear in The Purge comes from its mystery. This movie overcomplicated the idea of what the Purge is and lacked nearly everything that makes a movie memorable and compelling. Was it enjoyable? Yes, to an extent. Was it a well-made movie? Not really.
