This film is as immersive as it is disturbing. The use of black and white and experimental imagery, reminiscent of early avant-garde film makers and heavily influenced by Bunuel’s L’age Dor and early Lynch was intoxicating. The subtle, but effective use of forth wall breaking draws you in to this brutal storytelling and the realisation that these events; the disfigurement of soldiers, baby farms and exploitation of the ‘unfortunate’, made me shiver. The makeup effects were clever and extremely well executed and however disturbing, you have to give props to that young actress that has to breast feed at age 7. It was also nice to see newborns playing newborns. Not an obvious 20lb 6month old trying to be passed off as one. This deserves all the recognition that it got.

Hauntingly shot in black and white, this Oscar nominee for Best International Feature is a reimagination of the true story of Danish serial killer Dagmar Overbye in 1920s Copenhagen with an unexpectedly touching narrative of an obtuse young woman beaten by crime horror and harsh realities to come of age to be a surrogate mother of hope and warmness in that bleak period of poverty and moral abandonment.

    It's brutal but beautiful.

"The Girl with the Needle" is one of those films that grips you from the start and refuses to let go. The visual style immediately brings to mind the eerie beauty of German Expressionism, setting a tone that's both nostalgic and unsettling. You feel the weight of wartime struggles right away, but the way the story unfolds-it tightens its hold on you, slowly, relentlessly. And then, just when you think you've processed everything, the realization hits: this actually happened. That final shock lingers long after the credits roll, making the film not just memorable, but truly haunting. #KiduMovie.

An exquisite film. It shows vulnerable and erratic human nature at its finest, both in women and men, against the backdrop of war and its social class. I like that the shock of violence and horror is conveyed almost silently, in contrast to the cries of birth. The ending isn't "happy," as others have mentioned. It's necessary and sheds some light on such a dark world that will continue to be brutal for this girl and this woman. I'm pleasantly surprised that a male director has portrayed this reality so well. I’m native spanish speaker: Una película exquisita.

👌👍💜 Every now and then we definitely need to cleanse our eyes from all the 'disposable' trash of pop productions and... take a good dive into true auteur CINEMA. Truly a beautiful auteur film!! If it weren't for the ending, we could easily label it as a Neo-Realist film in full Italian DeSica style... (only the last 2 minutes go against the sense of classic neorealism). Atmospheres dense with sensations, recreated with a perfect collaboration of set design and photography. And very Good Acting, incredibly very good acting! Beautiful

This is a stunningly well done, psychological horror film. The photography is sumptuous, the sound / score exceptionally impactful and the subject matter of the depths of disregard for the life and well being of others amid and following WW1 is haunting. The tension and impact Magnus Van Horn achieves without being graphic is extraordinary.

A haunting psychological drama about the real horrors of life, the social issues of the post-war era, and human cruelty toward one another. Visually, the film is stunning. The cinematography is particularly impressive, with masterful use of angles, shadows, and mirrors—reminiscent of Orson Welles.
