The Good House

Really enjoyable movie and more subtle than I expected. Great actors.

Two pros at the top of their game. A terrific movie. Avoids a lot of the alcoholic stereotypes and has a genuine heart.

Good acting by Weaver & Kline, but just a boring theme that has been done to death by Hollywood. An odd part was that Kline's character accepted Weaver's whether she drank or not. Really?

Phenomenal performance by Sigourney Weaver. She's in every scene so she has to carry the movie but she does it excellently. It's a story of present day life and its struggles. A small movie with a large point. Also it's great to see Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline together back together again. Well worth the watch.

If you're struggling with alcohol or know someone who is or are in recovery yourself this movie is a must see. It isn't obvious at the beginning but this movie will grab you in a way you'll never forget. In a way that could change lives. What seems to be a slightly meandering story line is intentional I think; life isn't always a straight line, especially an alcoholic life. It's usually not a straight line to the bottom. The audience is lulled by the beautiful little town (it's beautifully filmed) and drawn into Hildy's (Sigourney Weaver) false bravado, until that facade starts to crack. The audience sees the cracks that Hildy doesn't until she breaks. The last third of this film is riveting and unforgettable. The performances of Sigourney Weaver, Kevin Kline and Rob Delaney are what make this film powerful.

I would watch Kevin Kline reading the phone book, so I really wanted to see this movie. He is as charming as he was in The Big Chill, and still looks as good. Sigourney Weaver is always a pleasure to watch. The entire cast was good in a sweet look at romance in late middle age, or actually early senior citizenry. And it shows the highs and lows of alcoholism in later years. It's a refreshingly calm, beautifully filmed character study.

I enjoyed it but it felt a little long. Some of the characters were barely described bur I guess were not important to the plot.

The actors and the story rang true.

I've really missed seeing Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver work together. They have terrific on-screen chemistry that goes back 25-30 years to The Ice Storm and Dave. They are two of my favorite actors and I appreciate a story that involves two leading septuagenarians with an active sex life. Hildy Good's disastrous and dangerous consequences of alcoholism are portrayed convincingly by Weaver.

This is a great film. I mistakenly believed it was solely a love story but in fact it is much more than that. The plot deals with loss, regrets, mistakes, despair and what it means to seek guidance and help when on the edge of a precipice.
