Sh*t happens. Made in the middle of M. Night Shyamalan’s fall from grace as a promising, young director, “The Happening” deserves its infamous reputation as a mess of a movie. However, the ridiculous premise and painfully awkward acting performances make it a contemporary classic so-bad-it’s-good film. Mark Wahlberg’s bargain-bin Matt Damon shtick falls flat in this film, as he’s terribly miscast as a science teacher who displays symptoms of the Happening, constantly appearing confused and disoriented even when he hasn’t been affected by it. It’s a good thing Zooey Deschanel found success with her quirky persona, because without it, her performance makes the viewer envious of the characters who offed themselves. Shyamalan’s willingness to take swings like this is admirable and entertaining, even when he misses.

It's original, but devolves into horrific acting and strange scenarios ..it's watchable on a rainy weekend afternoon if you are looking for something different, and somewhat entertaining, good effects for the time, and the story line has promise, but it's just not very well put together.

Now I know where birdbox comes from. Crappy story though, running away from an invisible virus.

Zoe Deschanel would eventually go on to become a great actress. Wahlberg and Shyamalan never got any better, unfortunately.

I love love love the happening. I love night"s humor and the acting. but most of all, it's really really entertaining. there's a reason why it's being played a lot on TV, cuz people gravitate towards it and are interested. if you don't like m night Shyamalan , that's your business, but I'm a fan

It is bad, but at least it is entertaining at points. One of the worst acted movies ever. Wahlberg and Deschanel are both atrocious.

The Happening starts off intriguing but quickly loses its way and becomes a bit of a head-scratcher.

THE worst movie I’ve ever seen. I’m still trying to figure out if it was supposed to be satirical like the Scary Movie movies. I mean, they couldn’t have been serious about this as horror, right?

This movie makes me laugh like a comedy. It’s so funny because it’s terribly cheesy. Not its intention but…it tries hard to be very serious but has terrible music, and awkward conversations and deaths.
