The Invitation (2022) attempts to channel the classic Hammer Horror aesthetic, which is a commendable and often cool stylistic choice. However, despite this promising visual foundation, the film ultimately falters, proving to be a rather dull and predictable affair that leaves little lasting impression.

I didn't have very high hopes for this movie going into it based on some of the reviews. What I found was that, IMO, many of the bad reviews were unfounded. This is a fantastically beautiful movie. While it is not full on horror, it has enough suspense to be a romance horror for me. While, of course the intro is a little far fetched. I mean who will just travel to a new country with a brand new relative on the spur of the moment. Other than that the movie is beautifully done. Nathalie Emmanuel does a brilliant job of showing emotion in every aspect of the role and who would not want to be seduced by Thomas Doherty. My only compliant is Stephanie Corneliussen who plays her role a vampire too convincing to almost give away the "surprise" otherwise I thought this was a fantastic movie!

A good amount of cheesy 70s - like horror tropes in combination with modern horror movie direction is a nice idea but there is a reason it died out back then … If you can watch it for free it’s a nice waste of time but don’t make it a waste of money too.

I came into this movie not with high expectations, just because if you go in with to of a high expectation it'll just bother you more when it doesn't live up to it (I'm looking at you Avatar). But I found myself enjoying the movie, not knowing how our protagonist was going to take the big reveal of her new love interest being a Vampire. Which the trailer to this movie ruins, but if you didn't see the trailer it was a nice reveal a good 40 or 50 minutes in. Where they spent a good chunk of time of our protagonist falling for this guy, not like in love but definitely some sparks. An they also incorporated some Dracula (1992) moments, like the claws appearing through the bed's canopy. Nice touch. I really enjoyed many of the Horror elements they had. Another particular scene was when one maid stood still out of fear in a wine cellar, because of a vampire behind her, and the vampire moves so quickly that the maid just disappears in between the flickering light. It was wonderful. But sadly the movie wasn't like that the whole time. So the big issue with this movie is the ending. Modern horror movies don't like leaving their movies ambiguous, or at least the bad ones don't. The original Chainsaw Massacre ends with our final girl barely escaping the clutches of Leatherface, as he wildly swings his chainsaw in frustration. This movie really needed a scene like that, because if you don't end your movie like that, then there's only two options: Death of the Final Girl or Death of the Villain. An this movie went with the latter. So the whole movie they set up this marriage that Dracula needs. An yes it was that Dracula, which I didn't have a huge problem with, I mean it was a little corny, but it was the least of all the problems. So Dracs needs this marriage, to a third wife, in order to truly become the Prince of Darkness or whatever. And our heroine is put into a predicament, where she's forced to say yes because she can't escape. I mean, she did escape, but was immediately found my Dracula's cronies in the nearest town. Which could have been dealt with in a entirely different manner, like having the all the townsfolk be proven to be loyal to Dracula, but instead it just looks like this one house that answered the door just happen to be Dracula's gardeners. But anyways, she's forced into the marriage with Dracula, where she now must drink his blood and he'll drink her blood. But the only issue is during the ceremony, she drinks to much of his blood which makes him woozy and he almost faints. Which is rich, because in every vampire movie I've seen, that has never happened. Just silly, silly writing. But Dracula becomes woozy, and during that moment, our heroine leaps into action, frees a maid (who was original going to be eaten by the newlyweds, like shoving cake into each others face), and sets fire to the building. All during this time, the humans in attendance, Dracula's loyalist, flee the 'church', and our heroine follows suit, with the traumatized/wounded maid in tow. Now here comes a major issue because of poor writing. The following scene, our heroine and maid are fleeing from the first wife of Dracula, but we've already established that vampires move very quickly. The flickering light scene that I mentioned earlier, weren't flickering like....flick......................................................................................................................................................................flick. But like flick, flick, and boom the maid was just ripped away. So vampires move quick. But our heroine is running away with the maid in tow, and Dracula's first wife pursues her in the same speed that the wounded human is moving.....why? Then the heroine and the first wife get into a fight, just as they enter into the foyer of the castle. But the fight is almost immediately interrupted by Dracula's second wife, who they haven't established as this sympathetic character, she's just a little nicer to our heroine. In fact, there's a scene where they kill a maid, and wife 2 smiles gleefully as they scoop blood into her wine glass. So she's not a good person. Anyways the fight goes exactly as bad movies do, wife number two kills the first wife of Dracula along with herself, by impaling each other on a statue's spear. Just so stupid. And almost immediately, Dracula, having finally recovered from his blood loss by eating a cookie and having some Kool-Aid, begins to fight our Heroine. Which you may be thinking that Dracula should be super strong, and that he'll just lock her in the basement in a flash or snap her neck. Nope, in fact he's defeated 'Super easy, barely an inconvenience.' An with that, she's turned back into a human, and lives happily every after......Psych. The movie ends with her and a friend, that they introduced at the beginning of the movie, hunting down one of Dracula's cronies in London walking toward his shop with a metal baseball bat. Because I guess killing someone isn't illegal if you can prove that they serve a evil/dark being. Also, she should have killed him when she had powers, because there's no guaranteed she's going to win.....just saying. But yeah, rating wise.....4 out of 10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐, it started off with potential, but boy did it flame out quick. Watch it if you have Hulu, so you can see how a ending can ruin a decent/alright story. But outside of that, it's a definite miss if you can help it.

I have enjoyed seeing Nathalie Emmanuel in other movies and so I decided to check this one out for her. Evie Alexander is a lonely, hardworking girl with very few people in her life that she can talk to until she obtains information that she has a distant relation that invites her to a family gathering in England in an old but elegant mansion with servants and fine dining. It all seems too good to be true until she spends several spooky nights that reveal a terrible secret that leads to an epic encounter. This wasn’t half bad as a thriller for the first hour or so but the last several minutes ended as a disappointing horror film. I’ve seen worse but then again, I have seen better. Nathalie Emmanuel is lovely and capable actress with others in this cast as good, but others weren’t good enough to save this.

Terrible. First off, this movie was definitely made for a “modern audience,” and by that I mean that the plot will unfold is strange ways to ensure that the autonomy and integrity of the female lead never comes into question. When offered a *long life*, wealth, status etc… at the cost of hurting a few people, she doesn’t even consider it for a second. I think most people would think twice about it, but she doesn’t, because god forbid she have any flaws. This is suppose to be a horror movie, but at no point did I feel like she was in any genuine danger, which strips the movie of any genuine tension or suspense. Then at the end the girl boss takes on her final form, pun intended, and people basically just sit still as her enemies allow themselves to be defeated. The premise was actually interesting, but the writers just played it so predictably and safe. A female character with no flaws who can’t be harmed as a lead character in a horror movie just feels like an obvious dead end idea. It’s not scary or horror, it’s just a love story gone wrong with blood and gore. And the worst part is, the main villain, if he really wanted her affection, could have tried being less of a complete entitled douche. If your life depends on this girl loving you, maybe try a little harder. There’s a point where he tries and she does start to like him, then he does a complete 180’ and is like “now that you have started to like me a little, let me drop all of this baggage on you”. If he had moved a little slower or tried to be a little more likeable or relatable she could have said yes. But no, he can’t do that, because how else can you have her defeat him… I’ll spare you any spoilers, but this film sucked.

Before you call me crazy, remember: the world has opinions to give and sell, so it's not just yours that's worth paying for. Well, be it a dark atmosphere so well created and elaborated under magnificently dark scenarios, a tension so delicate and so well done that it makes your spine shiver, or a beautiful, well-acted and complete cast. All of this complements the beautiful and haunting story of The Invitation, a dark romance that borders on wonderful in my humble and poor opinion. I love this movie!
