The Little Mermaid

- Rating: 1.5 out of 5 starsSadly, the live action film really doesn't bring anything new to the table. Yes, the songs are still great and Halle Bailey gave a strong performance, but the live action film really highlights the magic that animation can bring to a relatively simple story. Plot wise, the film rightfully stays pretty true to the original, just without the bright colours and cute creatures with exaggerated facial expressions. By reducing these anthropomorphic elements, the film loses so much character and charm. I found the live action film incredibly dull and disengaging. Animation is unique in it's ability to create different worlds which set new rules and steer viewers away from certain expectations. This was particularly clear to me during the land scenes where Ariel is unable to use her voice to communicate - these live action scenes irritated me in ways the animation didn't. Overall, this seems like an expensive mistake for Disney, which added very little and lost quite a lot.

- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsHoney, let’s talk The Little Mermaid—aka the movie that came dressed in a visually stunning gown but forgot to bring the Disney magic clutch to match. Yes, it’s pretty. Yes, the underwater shots are giving “screensaver chic.” But that oomph, that sparkle, that classic Disney zing? MIA. Now, kids and teens will eat this up like it’s snack time at sea, no doubt. But for the grown folks? It’s hard not to wonder: could they have cast this better? Let’s be clear—Halle Bailey is a goddess with fins. Her voice? Angelic. She does Alan Menken’s music proud and carries the movie on her gill-covered shoulders. But when it comes to chemistry with Prince Eric… meh. It’s not giving swoon. It’s giving “scene partners.” Look, Jonah Hauer-King is fine. Like, tea-with-no-sugar fine. But what if we’d had Jean-Luc Bilodeau for that quirky charm, or Hunter Sansone to serve dreamy eyes and softboy energy? Or hello, Regé-Jean Page—because if we’re going royal, let’s really go royal. Flip it the other way and imagine Jonah staying as Eric, but playing across someone like Keke Palmer—comedy, confidence, and charisma for days. Or Zendaya, who brings grace, vocals, and the romantic pull that was sorely missing. And Brandy? Love her, but girl already had her Disney princess moment in a pumpkin. Now let’s talk the real scene stealer: Scuttle. Once Awkwafina shows up, it’s game over. “The Scuttlebutt” rap? Iconic, weirdly adorable, and proof Disney can still surprise us when they stop playing it safe. But Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy? Ugh. It’s like they showed up for the wrong Disney movie. No sparkle, no sass, no signature. It’s giving paycheck, not passion. So yes, it’s still a good, cute, family-friendly flick—plenty to love. But next time, maybe mix in a little more chemistry and a lot less autopilot. We want magic, not just mermaids.
- Rating: 2.5 out of 5 starsI remember when I first watched this movie, and how disappointing it was that Ariel didn't have that bright red hair. Atlas, Halle Bailey's voice was very beautiful, just like how the original Ariel's voice was beautiful. Though, the movie isn't in comparison of the original, as you can never replace the original. Also, I was very disappointed when they didn't give our girl the sparkly dress at the end of the whole thing, otherwise I thought the movie was decent enough. 😊
- Rating: 0.5 out of 5 starsActores que ni concuerdan, malas canciones, un cgi horrible, que mas decir no me refiero a la polémica de la actriz que interpreta a la sirenita pero me refiero a otros actores.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 starsPerfectly well sang by our favourite girl!
