Rather like time travelling back to the 50's, how society thought of women, how people chose who to marry, life in the South. I thought Joanne Woodward was way too old to play a 23 year old, but she was 28 at the time. Just an old face I guess. Paul Newman, Angela Landsberry, Lee Remick, this movie had the stars.

watched about half of it on tv pbs 2018. that was about all i cd take. Lots of fake southern accents. Lee Remick super hot. Joanne not so much, but married Paul later that year. Interesting look at South in the 50s or earlier.

While entertaining the plot is a bit rough around the corners.

Loved it, the only complaint I have is, I wish Orsen Wells would speak more clearly, he definitely mumbled his lines a lot. However he is a fine actor, who knew how to steal a scene.

I have never been a big fan of William Faulkner, and I don't think his work translates all that well here. I like Paul Newman as much as the next person, but I never really got a sense for who his character was and why he should be with Clara. The "romance" between Clara and Ben reminded me a lot of The Music Man, with the shady stranger coming into town and trying to woo the "old maid." Orson Welles' performance comes off like more of a caricature and I was afraid he was going to have a heart attack any minute. It wasn't a bad movie, but there isn't a whole lot of plot and I didn't really buy into some of the scenes in the second half of the movie. If you are looking for a good Paul Newman movie, The Sting, The Hustler, Butch & Sundance and Cool Hand Luke are all better.

I was surprised by Martin Ritt's film. Based on a collection of Faulkner's short stories -- the idea of a filmmaker attempting to capture Faulker's work on screen -- especially in 1958 -- seems like an impossible task. But Ritt pulled it off. Paul Newman is excellent -- and erotically beautiful.
