The Merry Gentlemen

I was so disappointed to realize that this movie is really, really boring.

Had the filmmakers evolved from the expected to the unexpected, this holiday romp would’ve been more merry and bright.

There’s nothing distractingly bad about this one and there are perhaps enough boxes ticked for undemanding Christmas movie completists but because of the overcrowded space, there’s also nothing here that’s worth a click.

Murray and Robertson feel tired as leads, and while Murray is making it work onstage, the more conventional scenes all feel like they’re missing some holiday spice (among other things).

The script adds elements of “Coyote Ugly” and “Magic Mike” to the fusion of romantic comedy and Christmas movie and the result is extremely boring.

It’s pretty adorable and, with Britt Robertson and Chad Michael Murray starring, it’s well-acted and genuinely charming.

The Merry Gentlemen offers mild titillation thanks to the dance numbers and general shirtlessness that abounds throughout, and I think that’s why anyone is watching, am I right?

Ultimately, for as much as The Merry Gentlemen wants to be an enjoyable film, there is not much to this Christmas movie.

Though The Merry Gentlemen may be predictable, it’s a cozy, uplifting film that instills hope and happiness, even among the world’s scrooges.



The Merry Gentlemen brings the merry and the eye candy, and that’s good enough for me.
