The Miseducation of Cameron Post

Cameron - the kind of cool kid who'd use the word "cool" with caution - fits Moretz like a glove.

This exquisite, bittersweet sophomore effort announces Akhavan as a major talent.

Akhavan plays it with poignant wit, zest and a lusty sense of defiance, combining the bonding charms of a brat-pack crowd-pleaser with the psychological terrors of a prom-night horror flick.

We need more movies like this, where the filmmakers do not judge these young characters - but in which they find strength and support in believing in themselves. It could make all the difference to just one person watching it.

Director Desiree Akhavan, who adapted the film from Emily M Danforth's novel, strikes a delicate balance between satire and polemic.

It's all done beautifully. Witty and funny too, but at a consistent, compassionate pace throughout. A lovely sigh of a movie.

Add it all up and what we have is a coming-of-age tale as emotionally resonant as it is brutally important.

While Moretz is at her best, this really is the Akhavan show, whose work here is accomplished, measured and rock-steady.

Nail[s] the intricacies of emotional abuse in such terrible detail, while muted by pastel colours of Akhavan's narrative zaniness.

...this is a poignant and involving drama to a point. But it's also low-key to a fault...
