The Monkey King 3

"The Monkey King 3" is more about eye-popping spectacle than narrative sweep, but it's generous with images that make audiences go, "Oooh!"

Cheang does his able best to balance a love story with the heightened fantasy action expected of the previous two films, and after a rocky start he largely succeeds.

Much of "The Monkey King 3" is devoted to philosophical musing and romantic mooning, the latter cued to a drippy ballad.

While the CGI effects may strain a little from time to time, the story and the characters are appealing and enormously entertaining.

Having eschewed the usual depictions of Wukong causing supernatural mayhem, The Monkey King 3 stands or falls on its musings about love in all its forms - and they're largely unsatisfying.

A chore to sit through.

Its action scenes are let down by the poor graphics and cringey acting. As for the romantic storyline, it is cliched and forced, and ends predictably.
